ChatGPT – Now the Fake Sites Have Started

You knew it would happen. Hackers have created hundreds of fake ChatGPT apps & URLs which in fact are information-stealing malware on your devices. These fraudsters are even available in the Google Play Store!

These fake apps will steal your passwords, use your financial information to sign you up to paid services, and commit other devious activities.

You can protect yourself by:

  • Being wary of unfamiliar profiles asking for personal information. Remember the adage – if it seems to good to be true, it probably isn’t.
  • Don’t download files from unknown websites. Remember just because something is in the Google Play Store doesn’t mean it’s legit.
  • Install Antivirus protection which can help keep malware off your device.
  • To use ChatGPT, only go to the OpenAI website and use it from there.

Kurt the Cyberguy has more suggestions on his site about how to protect yourself from this dilemma.

Just one more reason to beware ChatGPT!

I think everything listed here is a good reminder of practices that are true for the entirety of the internet: don’t give out personal info, don’t download files from unknown websites, etc.

It’s just like when you get a phishing email that looks like it’s from PayPal but it’s from a scammer. It’s not a bad reflection of PayPal, just like scammers trying to create fake ChatGPT sites isn’t a bad reflection of ChatGPT.

It’s just typical scammers doing what scammers do.

Good reminder to stay alert 😎👍🏼

Hi Jeannine,

A timely warning as so many rush forward to get their slice of the pie.

I also have found myself wondering how many are creating these AI writing tools and you write your articles there and then they upload them to their own sites as their own. Something for folks to consider as well when signing up for the growing AI writing sites.

Regards,

Jason

That's going to be a huge issue, I agree. You can work super hard creating a post, gathering information, adding personal insights, only to have it basically stolen by ChatGPT to answer someone else's question. Then they can turn it into content on their site and monetize your work! So wrong as well!

Jason, this is something that is at the forefront of my mind.

It is a circle, perhaps.
We give, we take.

One way to mitigate this is to be more frequent with updating and repurposing your content.
That will also positively impact your SEO.

On we go!

Cassi

I agree, we are feeding the engine, and taking from that same engine at the same world. This is the new world, and I think it is more important to be able to adopt to it, then to push back. Pushing back may be a detrimental move in terms of longevity and success.

Some very good points here, Kyle.
It is the "Brave New World."

Cassi

It will be hard to protect our unique content when ChatGPT can just scrape and take. Do you agree?

It indeed is the Brave New World!

I suppose the argument is that our unique content, has ideas pulled from others unique content. That is how we go about creating content, we get our "ideas" in some form or another, through research, through in person education, through watching media and video content.

And if that is the case, though we write in a unique way, is AI not just a curation of that as well?

This resonates, Kyle and @JeannineC

"That is how we go about creating content, we get our "ideas" in some form or another, through research, through in-person education, through watching media and video content.

And if that is the case, though we write in a unique way, is AI not just a curation of that as well?"

AI is the curation of information on steroids.

Cassi

Exactly the case, and it will offer us ideas we would never come up with in our manual research. That doesn't mean you can just instantly build content and publish, there is much more sophistication to it than this...but it is curation on steriods and with instant access to much more information than we have ever had access to.

Excellent points, Kyle.
I agree.

Cassi

Thanks, Jeannine. What I have discovered about ChatGPT is that it is reliably unreliable. Some of the facts it has shared with me are so far out that they make me chuckle. It is suitable for outlines and other basic tasks - that's about it.

One member of WA wrote yesterday that Adsense disallowed his site due to AI-related content.

As far as scamming goes, what you've suggested is great advice. Crime pays, and as long as it does, crime will continue. It's very sad that we have to compete with the difficulties of succeeding in business and with the constant threat of scams at the same time.

Dave

Hi Dave,

This, right here, "Adsense disallowed his site due to AI-related content" is where all the great opportunities reside for us in WA.

We are taught the best way to build our businesses - with original content and consistent effort.
Follow that path and you are good to go!

Cassi

You are so right! I wouldn't trust ChatGPT with telling me the correct time! Maybe getting some ideas, but as for writing content? Never!

Right now there aren't any true consequences for scamming which further complicates the issue. I therefore try to do everything in my power to stop them from hurting anyone - hence, this post.

You're right! Sadly I'm seeing some members here who are asking a single question in ChatGPT, then pasting the resulting information as a post on their site. They are so proud of themselves for having found an easy way to generate content. They are so wrong about that!

Wrong is an understatement, Jeannine!

This too shall pass and I intend to consistently follow what we are taught - produce original content, dutifully.

In time, the pendulum will balance things out and I want to be on the right side when it does. 🙂
I have too much invested to do it any other way.

Cassi

Yes, Cassi. It gives me comfort to know that AI hasn't stolen our opportunity here at WA. The path is clear, it's just a matter of walking it. Or running, if able😊

I thank you for that.

Absolutely, Dave!

Hello Jeannine, Thanks for the valuable info. I have already had problems with it popping up when I open my Chrome browser.

My thinking is I will go to it when I want. I don't like it blocking me off in the middle of something and popping up.

It has its advantages, but I think they have much tweaking to do yet.

Thanks again for the information.

Chet

I'm most worried about the sites posing to be ChatGPT when they are scammers instead. Glad you are using the official one, but yeah, it also has its issues!

Thanks for the heads-up, Jeanine.

JD

Glad to share this. I want to protect our WA world!

:)
