Goodbye Askismet & SI Captcha Anti-Spam, Hello WP-Spamshield!
So a couple weeks back right after I got back to work here at Wealthy Affiliate I came across a post from Kyle about the Akismet Plugin and how they were going from free to paid. I was both excited and sad about this post...
Why Was I Sad?
Well, just as the title of Kyle's post suggested, it was the Dark Side of Greed. It pains me whenever I see obvious mistakes that were made due to a greedy nature. Askismet had protected my site for a long time and now I needed to move on, which meant change.
Obviously we all have some trepidations about change, but I followed his suggestion of WP-Spamshield and took the plunge...
Why Was I Happy?
After I had installed WP-Spamshield and deleted the Askismet plugin I had an idea. I had never liked having the Captchas in order for someone to leave a comment as I know that it can very easily block you from getting the engagements that we all are working towards.
I had tried removing the SI Captcha plugin before to see if Askismet would still be up for the task, but it never worked. I would get a ton of spam comments everyday and before long I reactivated the SI Catpcha plugin.
Now with WP-Spamshield, I decided that I would try the same experiment with removing the Captcha. To my pleasant surprise, not one bit of spam hit my sites. Not even in the spam folder! This made life so much easier!!
Lastly I was able to delete two plugins and replace with only one, which is another solid benefit. Having too many of those can slow our sites down and we don't want that!
Wrap Up
Anywho, a big thanks to Kyle and those that created the WP-Spamshield plugin. Thanks to both, life is easier and who can complain about that?

Keep Working It!

The new Spamshiled is amazing. I haven't gotten a single spam comment, versus loads of them every single day with Akismet.
I didn't know that captcha can be removed, or that sit should be removed.
yeah I am loving Spamshield. Try taking the Captcha off for a day or two just by deactivating it first. Then if no spam, you can go ahead and delete it!
Thanks for the info, I must have missed Kyles warning, have done this now and will check tomorrow as I get a lot of spam, like the delete 2 plugins, works for me.
I know sometimes it can be hard to keep up with all of the info that goes on here. That is why it is important for us all to share.
Yeah was never a fan of that one but it did the job for a while. Happy to have moved on past it.
