Don't let your blog posts get buried away.

Many bloggers make the mistake of publishing dozens of shorter posts that never gain traction. The truth is, search engines like Google reward depth, authority, and structure—not scattered, one-off articles.

That’s where the concept of the pillar post comes in. A pillar post is a comprehensive, long-form piece of content that acts as the foundation of your website’s SEO strategy. By creating a central hub of information and linking supporting posts around it, you can build a content cluster that dominates search rankings.

What is a Pillar Post?

A pillar post (also known as cornerstone content) is an in-depth article that comprehensively covers a broad topic. Think of it as the “ultimate guide” to a subject within your niche. It doesn’t just scratch the surface—it provides valuable information that readers would otherwise have to piece together from multiple sources.

Unlike shorter blog posts that dive into one narrow subject, pillar posts take a holistic approach. They act as a hub and link out to smaller, related posts (called cluster posts). For example, if you run a home décor blog, a pillar post might be “The Ultimate Guide to Fall Home Décor” while cluster posts would cover throw pillows, blankets, table runners, and candles.

Google loves this format because it shows topical authority. By creating one strong, authoritative post supported by related articles, you’re signaling to search engines that you’re an expert in that field.

Why Pillar Posts Boost SEO

There are several reasons why pillar posts are powerful SEO assets:

Keyword Coverage: Since pillar posts are long and detailed, they naturally include a wide range of related keywords, both short-tail and long-tail. This increases your chances of ranking for multiple search queries.

Content Clusters: Internal linking between your pillar post and cluster posts creates a logical structure. This helps search engines understand the hierarchy of your content, making it easier to rank.

User Experience: Readers love pillar posts because they act as one-stop resources. The longer people stay on your page, the better your engagement metrics look to Google.

Structure of a Winning Pillar Post

The success of a pillar post lies not only in the topic you choose but also in how you structure it.

  • Headings and Subheadings (H2/H3): Break content into clear, skimmable sections.
  • Internal Links: Link out to your own supporting cluster posts. For example, a travel itinerary pillar should link to separate posts about restaurants, packing lists, and hotels.
  • External Links: Reference authoritative sources to build trust.
  • Word Count: Aim for 2,500–5,000 words depending on your niche. Depth matters.
  • Evergreen Updates: Refresh your pillar post every few months with new data, examples, or product recommendations to keep it current.

Why it Works: Seasonal content is highly searched and easy to monetize with affiliate products from Amazon or Wayfair. By interlinking all posts, you create a fall décor content hub.

Travel Blogging

Pillar Post: “The Complete 7-Day Amalfi Coast Itinerary”
Travelers planning a trip want detailed itineraries. This pillar could break down activities, hotels, and transport.

Cluster Posts:

  • Best Amalfi Coast Restaurants
  • What to Pack for Amalfi in Summer
  • Top Day Trips from Amalfi

Why it Works: Travel forums and Pinterest boards often share comprehensive itineraries. This type of content attracts backlinks and social shares.

Affiliate Marketing / Blogging

Pillar Post: “The Beginner’s Guide to Affiliate Marketing”

  • ClickBank vs Digistore24: Which Network Is Better in 2025?
  • Impact.com Affiliate Program Review

Why it Works: These posts create a cluster around affiliate marketing. The pillar provides the “big picture,” while the cluster posts act as monetized review pages.

Pet & Lifestyle

Pillar Post: “The Complete Guide to Traveling with Pets in an RV”
Pet owners want to know how to keep their furry friends comfortable while on the road.

Cluster Posts:

  • RV Pet Essentials: Gear to Keep Pets Happy on the Road
  • How to Keep Pets Safe While Traveling in an RV
  • Best Travel Bowls, Beds, and Carriers for Dogs and Cats

Why it Works: Long-tail keywords like RV pet essentials have strong buying intent. Amazon affiliate links integrate naturally.

Food & Recipes

Pillar Post: “The Ultimate Guide to Meal Prepping for Beginners”
This would include how to plan meals, what tools to use, and beginner-friendly recipes.

Cluster Posts:

  • Best Containers for Meal Prep
  • 10 Quick Meal Prep Recipes for Busy Weeknights
  • How to Store Prepped Meals Safely

Why it Works: Meal prepping is a massive search trend with high Pinterest traffic potential. Supporting posts can each rank individually while funneling traffic back to the pillar.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Own Pillar Post

  1. Choose a Topic: Pick something broad enough to cover multiple subtopics but specific enough to be useful.
  2. Keyword Research: Use tools like Jaaxy, SEMrush, or RightBlogger to find both short-tail and long-tail keywords.
  3. Plan Cluster Posts: Decide which supporting articles will link back to your pillar.
  4. Write In-Depth Content: Aim for a minimum of 2,500 words. Go deeper than your competitors.
  5. Add Links: Interlink clusters to the pillar and vice versa.
  6. Update Regularly: Keep your pillar fresh by revisiting it quarterly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Choosing a Topic Too Narrow: If your pillar can be fully covered in 800 words, it’s not broad enough.
  • Keyword Stuffing: Write for humans first, then optimize.
  • Forgetting Updates: An outdated “ultimate guide” loses credibility.
  • Weak Internal Linking: Without clusters pointing back to the pillar, the SEO benefits won’t be as strong.

Conclusion: Build Your SEO Foundation

Pillar posts are more than just long articles—they’re the backbone of your SEO strategy. By creating authoritative guides supported by related cluster posts, you establish topical authority, increase engagement, and attract backlinks. Whether you’re in travel, lifestyle, affiliate marketing, food, or pets, pillar content helps you rank higher and monetize smarter.

👉 If you’re serious about growing your blog traffic, start by choosing one pillar post topic in your niche this month. Build supporting posts around it, interlink everything, and watch your rankings climb.

Hi Jannette. Thanks For Your Post. Stay Having a Good Weekend😊😊

You have a good weekend as well. Our weekend has been getting rain rom the hurricane.

Hey, Jannette,
Thanks for the article. However, how do I enable the pillar/cornerstone article? I knew how to do it with Yoast SEO plugin, but I don't use it now, and my current theme doesn't seem to support creating a cornerstone article/content. Your tips will be much appreciated.

John

Hello John, Great question! 👍 You don’t actually need a plugin like Yoast or a theme setting to “enable” a pillar or cornerstone post. The concept is more about how you structure and interlink your content, rather than a specific WordPress feature.

Here’s how you can do it without Yoast:

Pick your main guide (the pillar): This will be your in-depth, comprehensive post.

Interlink manually: In your supporting cluster posts, add links back to your main guide. Inside your pillar, link out to those cluster posts. This creates the same “hub and spoke” structure that Yoast highlights with its cornerstone option.

Make it easy to find: You can feature your pillar in menus, sidebars, or “featured post” blocks so readers (and Google) know it’s important.

Keep it updated: Refresh it regularly so it stays authoritative.

The “cornerstone” label in Yoast is just a way of reminding yourself that this post is special. But even without that label, as long as you build strong internal links and keep it evergreen, you’ll get the same SEO benefits.

Also link your cluster posts back to the pillar posts as well so you cover both and get that extra juice for your website. authority as well.

2

Great tip, working on one of these pillar posts now.

You welcome I believe Jay has some training on Pillar posts as well as listicles which can also be used in a similar way as pillar posts and then internal linking to other posts.

Yes, I fall back on Jays training since came back to Wealthy Affiliate.
