Introduction

The digital economy is becoming ever more important as the world becomes more connected, and yet so many businesses are just not ready to take advantage of all the benefits that it offers. If you’re in business and you want to keep up with your competitors, then it’s vital that you make sure your company is taking full advantage of everything the digital economy has to offer, from e-commerce to online marketing and advertising. And the good news is that it’s never been easier to start and grow a digital business—if you know what you’re doing, that is!

Starting Up

The number one mistake that digital business owners make is they do not understand how important it is to have a plan in place. Every single successful entrepreneur started with a plan, so if you want your digital business to be successful, create a detailed plan on what you are going to achieve and how you are going to get there. Then, stick to it religiously!

Getting Clients

Before you begin, it’s important to know how your business will get paid. Will you create an online store? Will you do work for a large corporation, or will you be working with individuals? Knowing where your income stream will come from is essential before you begin your business. This way, when you run into financial trouble down the road, at least you have something (or someone) to fall back on.

Serving Clients

Your digital business is not your only client. While your company has to be able to make money in order for you to keep it running, it needs at least one other client as well. This will help you separate your business from your hobby, as well as ensure that you don’t lose everything if something goes wrong. It also gives you someone else to talk with about what you do; perhaps they’ll have some great ideas or feedback for your work.

Keeping Clients

The best way to build a customer base is through customer service. This may seem like common sense, but it’s too often ignored by small businesses. Instead of keeping customers happy, companies focus on what they can sell next, not how they can keep current clients happy. In order to grow your business exponentially, you must figure out ways in which you can provide great customer service.

Growing Up

Starting any business is an exercise in patience. The process is both rewarding and discouraging. At times you’ll have to push yourself, but remember that your journey will be different from anyone else’s. Stick with it, take advantage of help when you can get it, and never stop moving forward—even if you must look back every once in a while. Your future self will thank you for taking these steps today!
