Choosing just One Website to commit to!

Well day 2 of conscientiously reading more is going well. I must say I'm noticing that the reading often ends up with me watching a video or listening to a podcast! It would seem that the amount of watching and listening time yesterday exceeded the reading time. So I'll keep an eye on that. It wasn't so much not wanting to read, but I wanted to follow the ideas, and the last podcast was pretty good!

This goes to show me that these mediums are so important today, and that is why a lot of members on this site are recommending to get into them. I certainly do get a lot of value out of watching and listening too.

Don't you just hate those You Tube ads that come on and tell ya you're wasting your time, and say that you should instead watch this instead... but I digress

The big thing that is sticking out and I can't ignore is that...

I have to make a decision!

All the reading yesterday pointed to this fact. I have to decide which website I'll focus on.

This is the core of the creative dilemma... to narrow down possibilities when the creative is naturally looking for more possibilities. It has me wringing my hands. It might be a FOMO in relation to the ideas I won't be pursuing.

What are the issues? Why won't I make the decision? Maybe because I've allowed myself to be in brainstorming mode, and I just need to bring it all down to basics and just decide to decide.

So... I'm giving myself this reading week to do just that. Decide on which website to go for and run with it. Even if I just need to toss a coin or something in the end, I'm going to make a decision by 3rd July. From then on, I'm going to just go with that for around 6 months. Then I'll reconsider. If I'm maintaining a rate of posting at least 3 times a week with good enough quality and traction... maybe just maybe I'll let myself diversify after 3 months. Imagine that, 6 months of moving forward as opposed to 6 months of pondering.

Already I know that decision may not be the best, regardless of how I make it, but if there's anything that was drummed into me last week, it is that by taking action I'll learn the most. Staying in analysis paralysis won't get me anywhere.

Getting back to that podcast late last night...

They said that today it is more important than ever to both focus on the one website, niche down into very specific topics, with quite a lot of detail, and it's also more important to build just that little bit faster than in the past. Something that just can't be done if I'm spreading myself too thin.

As this is reflecting what has been said on this platform many times over, I had to say to myself, "Just do it" (as much as I dislike that phrase). Choose one and stick to that one for a substantial period of time.

In the mean time, if you have anything great to read I wouldn't mind any recommendations you have!

So I'm curious if you had difficulties deciding what niche to go for?

Hello Jacquie.

This post caught my eye because yesterday I was contemplating switching gears to another site that would be easier for me to create posts quickly. Something I am already and expert in, which for me is making math easy to learn. I have been doing that for 20 years though, so even though it is an easy topic for me I've kind of been there done that.

This morning I am feeling that I am going to stick with my original website about Strength Training for Women. I have been doing this for about 5 years. I don't feel like a expert yet. I chose the topic to keep me focused on my Strength Training Goals and to become more of an expert.

I am also conscious of the stick to 1 website until it is really established. My wobbling on continuing with my site this week came from some bumps in the road and losing confidence in myself. One bump was someone being very negative about me doing the website. Another bump is me having difficulty with consistent strength training because I am not going to the gym due to the pandemic.

Doing some research and a good post does take me a couple of days. 3 a week seems like a good goal. Is that what folks think we should be shooting for?

What did you decide on? I think it has been about a month since your reading week.

Hi Denise,

Making maths easy to learn sounds so interesting... yet I get how it could be good to go with the Strength training for women, which sounds like what you're really into. It would be a good niche. You could possibly even niche down a little further...

I think there are a lot of websites that can be very appealing when the information is written by someone who is only a couple of steps ahead.

A lot of readers like to follow bloggers in their process of discovery, and they can feel more connected to someone at earlier stages of inquiry. The author can better remember what it was like to be first asking the questions.

No matter how much you know, there'll be an audience.

I think our minds can come up with excuses or try to get us distracted when we hit an obstacle in our writing.

As for those wobbles, let yourself get inspired here if there are any negative thoughts around you. There are a lot of supportive people on this platform.

You could even write on your website about the challenges of keeping up with strength training during the pandemic. Solve the problem for yourself and share that with your readers. Even if it is just little steps or changes you've made!

I ended up deciding on continuing a website I had started for people I'm helping online with basic website layout, social media, graphics and photoshopping. Helping them to do it themselves, rather than pay me to do it for them.

I'm finding a number of people I'm helping don't want to spend a lot of money (they're mainly start-ups), and end up wanting me to explain what they can do themselves, so I'm creating a blog that answers those questions.

Once I answer all the questions I've been asked, I'll get on with a site about how to "Undo your to-do list"... and get a little more creative.

Hi Jacquie

Thank you for sharing.

Yes you gotta make a decision.

I had no difficulties deciding what niche to go for: I enjoy gaming and I wanted to make money online so they became my 2 niches.
.
I am more focused on the make money online niche.

Best wishes

Delroy

Good to meet you Delroy!
That's great you knew what to follow quickly.
Did you work on one or the other first, or did you start with both niches?

Best wishes,

Jacquie

Thank you Jacquie , good to meet you too.
I worked on the make money online niche first.

Thank you , best wishes to you too.

Delroy

I agree with the general feeling on this and think you should consentrate on one site first, give it your full attention until it is up, running and gaining some traction.
We (my wife and I) are consentrating on her blog and YouTube at the moment and my photography blog is on the back burner.
She is starting to get lots of views (over 27k on her most watched video) and the subscribers has topped 1.4k
I can go back to my blog anytime as it is there waiting.

Best wishes and stay safe.
Gaz

That's exciting, Gaz!
Is your wife here on WA? I would love to see her YouTube channel.

I'm thinking of doing a "craft" style YouTube to go with the blog that is looking like it's at the top of my list right now, but a little concerned with the whole idea of keeping up regular uploads.

Best wishes,

Jacquie

Hi Jacquie, I am the one signed up to WA, but it is a joint effort.
I will pm you her YouTube channel by all means go and have a look and if you do please subscribe and leave a few comments.

Best wishes and stay safe.
Gaz

Will do! Thanks Gaz

Hi Gaz

Congratulations to you and your wife for your progress.

Yes, I canceled 5 websites! I am just concentrating on one now. Could not keep up with more. Good choice.
Joe

Ok thanks Joe,

It is good to get confirmation that working on one site is the way to go!

I have been a member here at WA and still haven't decided on a niche and I am just floundering around trying to learn what I can.
Hope it all comes together for you.
Have a Great Day!
-Chuck

Chuck- Do you have some ideas you are working from for a niche?

Not really. I have been working on my firearms related site....have about 3 or 4 articles ready to publish. My plan is to wait until I have 20 or so articles posted before I monetize it. I am also dabbling with another program that is geared towards advertising.

That sounds like a promising niche!

Thanks Chuck,
Yes it is quite tricky to choose a niche. Glad to know I'm not the only one floundering around! Yet from what I read below... I'm getting the feeling you're honing in on your niche! At least a good one to start with!

Best wishes,

Jacquie

What is your passion? There's four billion people, millions probably have interest in your favorite subjects. Think it through. Like I've said, I write books and bet a book on gnats would be great if you can find the gnat book readers through keyword targeted content. Chris.
