A recap on what I did yesterday – Day 2:
- Chose and registered a domain name
- Added my theme in WordPress
- Removed default posts and pages
- Added titles of pages – Main Keyword, About, Privacy Policy, Contact & Blog page
- Changed the Settings > Reading - selected my Main Keyword as the Front Page
- Changed the Settings > Reading – selected ‘Blog’ as Posts Page
- Changed the time zone to mine
- Changed the Permalinks setting
So now I’m on to …
Building the Core Elements to the Site
Ready to put this into action?
Start your free journey today — no credit card required.
So the first step for me is to add the All in one SEO pack plugin, the installation is automatic if you get a free domain through here at WA SiteRubix or if you buy your domain name through WA.
After adding the plugin it’s now time to activate it and configure the All in One SEO settings.
I go to the Dashboard > All in One SEO > General Settings > Home Page Settings – Here I’m going to fill in my Home Title and Home Description. My home title will be my main keyword, and my home description will be something like: Learn about ____ (my main keyword) etc., with up to 160 characters > then Update Options.
XML Sitemap & Social Meta
I go Dashboard > All in One SEO > Feature Manager and Activate the XML Sitemaps and the Social Meta. The XML Sitemaps creates a site map of your site so Google knows what pages and posts exist – the Social Meta is for when you post a page or post to social media it will pull up an image which you can later customize
Then I go Dashboard > All in One SEO > Social Meta and in the Home Title and Home Description I’m going to copy these from my Home Page Settings as outlined above > Update Options.
Yesterday I added an easy to navigate, clean theme to my site and looking at it now, I like how it looks good.
Now I’m going to go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes > Widgets and have taken out what I don’t want in the Widgets area and just getting it to how I want my website layout
Building the Menu
So now it’s time to build the menu. I go to Dashboard > Appearance > Menus – where it says Menu Name I’m going to call it Main Menu and just create the menu which will show at the top of the screen in my website and also created my Footer Menu.
Now with the ‘bones’ of my website in place, I’m going to leave it at that for now, so that’s Day 2 completed…
I’ll see you tomorrow with the next episode of Learn how to build a website yourself in WordPress in 2017.
And again, you’re most welcome to leave a comment or ask a question below if you wish to do so, thanks and …
Cheers,
Jacqueline
