There are two different metrics involved here. The first is getting indexed. Getting indexed by Google means that Google has recognized you have put new content up and it has seen it. In effect, that means that that content is on page 50,256 or thereabouts.

When it gets ranked it means it starts to get a page rank somewhat better than page 50,256. Typically most people have their browsers set showing 10 or 20 results and the only generally look at one page. When was the last time you looked at page 50,256? This is why ranking is important.
