What I Wish Someone Had Told Me About Starting a Website in Midlife
I’ve been part of Wealthy Affiliate, on and off, for over twelve years. Long enough to watch it evolve, to see new members come and go, to leave for a while myself — and come back.
This year, I made the decision to truly commit. I returned with a clear goal: to build a website that supports midlife and older adults who want to get online — calmly, confidently, and without tech overwhelm.
I brought with me years of experience, steady curiosity, and a teaching background that helps me explain things step by step. I created regular blog posts. I recorded videos (scary). I developed a lead magnet. I learned about SEO in 2025, coped (nearly) without my go to Jaaxy, I built tracking systems. I showed up.
And yet, what I wasn’t prepared for — even after twelve years of being around this space — was the deep, persistent quiet.
The Silence Is the Part No One Warns You About
I didn’t expect overnight results. I’ve been here long enough to know better than that. But I also didn’t expect how invisible the work would feel, even when I was doing it right.
There’s a period in website-building — and I suspect many of us hit it — where you're doing all the things:
- Publishing helpful content
- Updating older posts for SEO
- Sharing on social
- Offering something of genuine value
…and nothing seems to move.
No referrals.
No flicker of recognition.
Even Google won't index!!!
It’s hard not to take that personally. Even when you know better. Even when you tell yourself it’s normal. Even when the training tells you, “This takes time.”
Because knowing something intellectually and feeling it emotionally are two different things.
But Here’s What I’ve Learned (and Am Still Learning)
That silence — that frustrating, disheartening middle ground — is not failure.
It’s part of the process no one talks about.
It’s the compost stage. The part beneath the surface.
And it’s the part where most people quit. Not because they’re lazy. But because the effort doesn’t echo back quickly enough to feel real. It's 'what's the point?' stage.
I’ve thought about quitting more than once in recent months. I’ve wondered if maybe my audience doesn’t exist. Or if I’m just not cut out for marketing. Or if the internet has moved on without people like me.
But I haven’t quit.
And not quitting matters.
What’s Helped Me Keep Going
After twelve years in and around this platform, I know this truth intimately:
The people who win at this aren’t necessarily the fastest or the flashiest.
They’re the ones who keep quietly showing up.
What’s kept me going is:
- A simple, sustainable rhythm (2 how-to posts + 1 thoughtful post per week + videos to accompany them)
- A content plan that reflects who I am, not just what’s trending
- A growing body of work I’m genuinely proud of — even if it hasn’t “taken off” yet
- The knowledge that when someone does find my site, it’s ready for them
And, honestly, some self reflection!.
Writing the truth helps me stay connected to the “why.”
If You’re in This Space Too…
If you’re in the stage where your content is ready, but the audience hasn’t come yet… I see you.
If you’re quietly working, refining, learning, and feeling like no one notices… I understand.
If you’re wondering whether this is worth it, whether you’re cut out for this, whether it’s ever going to click — you are not alone.
And Finally…
I’ve been around this platform a long time. Long enough to know that people come and go quickly — and that sticking around quietly often speaks louder than anything else.
If you’re here too, quietly sticking it out, I’d love to hear your story.
What’s been the hardest part for you?
What’s kept you going when results were slow?
Let’s talk about the real parts — not just the highlights.
You never know who needs to hear that they’re not alone.
Don't give up
Have a fabdiddly day
Jackie

I can totally relate, Jackie.
What keeps me going? Partly that I really enjoy learning, I love working with my ChatGPT who has now named himself 'Quill' because he helps me write and translate.
I also have an ex-student who now has a 4-year old who likes looking at my parenting website. She doesn't comment much on there because English isn't her first language and she is afraid of 'not sounding right' and 'not finding the right words'.
I don't know how old your site is now - mine is three and a half months old - and I will keep going as long as I am enjoying what I am doing. Although it really is work. I am working at it as much as I possibly can without neglecting other things. I am fortunate in that I don't need to make any money from it, so I can just treat it as a hobby just like other people may take out a gym membership.
I believe you also enjoy learning. And I believe you also don't particularly need to make an income - so - what would you do with your time otherwise? Surely this is more interesting than mopping the floor one more time so it really shines? As long as you still have time for your family - I make sure that children and grandchildren come first (and also - most of the time - my dog), I think you can just add steadily to your compost pile and wait for it to mature. And when it does, it will be rich in nutrients.
Isabella
Hi Isabella, I love that you have a gpt called 'Quill'. Just perfect. I ask each of my gpts to tell me their name. I'm working with Fen at the moment!!
I have a multitude of hobbies that I enjoy doing but still enjoy the internet and online marketing. My site is 7 months old so I suppose I going through the '7 month itch!'
You're right, although I don't need the income or to spend any more time mopping floors my sites give me a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment.
I won't give up (not in my nature).
Keep in touch.

Hi Jackie!
Thanks for sharing your story!
I, like you, am a long-time member of WA and have been here since 2014. My lengthy story is posted on my profile.
I have been active for most years. There have been a few times when my corporation took more time out of my schedule in creating new website content and interacting here, but I have always remained a WA member. The website hosting and URL acquisition alone were worth it to me.
There have been times when growth was slow, but that never deterred me because affiliate marketing was not my main income source, just a fun bonus to efforts tied to my corporation.
I suppose I stick with this because it's a great way to keep my mind sharp and always thinking of ways to generate income. That's always been fun for me. So, I press on!
You have a fabdiddly (I love that word) too, Jackie!
Hey Howard,
I know it's difficult sometimes to stay focused (well, it is for me!) but I love learning and always have done. AI is a game changer and I'm enjoying learning about this.
It's a case of working through the 'quiet' times.
J
Yes, I will also admit that AI is now filling in the blanks of what to do next when quiet times present themselves. There is a lot to learn about AI! Thank goodness for WA on that front.
I've only been here for 2 1/2 years. During that time, I badly broke my arm in the first year, and then the following year, I got breast cancer. So far I'm doing well this year, so I feel like I'm catching up and it's like my first year :)
So, I keep on keeping on. Working now on cross-platform posting. It's a lot of work, but I'm still hoping I'm in the compost stage, too, lol.
Teri
Oh Teri, what a time you've had! My hiccup was a stroke!! After a health scare you tend to look at life a bit differently don't you.
I'm so pleased things seem to be going well for you now.
Onward and Upward.
J

Hi Jackie,
I sure can relate! Next year, 2026, will be my 30th year online.
I almost gave up after a major surgery. While I physically healed, it took me 18 months to regain my motivation. But here I am.
You are spot on by saying, "keep quietly showing up."
Winners show up and do the work.
Although I do the work much slower these days as I deal with Parkinson's.
Glen 🙂
Glen, you are a survivor and a fighter. I recognise that.
It doesn't matter the speed you go as long as it is in the right direction.
Keep going
J
