Recovering from Google core update by changing the domain name
Time for some analysis after Google's helpful content update
I follow several affiliate sites to keep up with what the competition is doing. Tools I use are usually ahrefs and chat GPT.
Now I've come across a somewhat unusual strategy where the owner of a site changes domains every year and it seems to happen after they've been hit by a Google algorithm update. It can take some time to rebuild a brand, but it can also take a very long time to regain ranking with the existing domain. I will now test this strategy after the helpful content update and will return with information on how changing the domain name affected the ranking.
I wonder if this strategy also can be used in a Google penalty.
A downward ranking trend can be a few months before deciding to change the domain name and development time must be taken into account to launch the new domain. So you can't really take raw data or Chat GPT as a fact.
Chat GPT answers:
#1 Domain
- The website had a significant drop in traffic around March 2020, which seems to be unrelated to any of the mentioned core updates.
- There isn't a noticeable change in traffic that corresponds with any of the listed core updates for 2022 or 2023.
#2 Domain
- There was a drop in traffic around June to July 2019, which again doesn't match with the listed core updates.
- There's a significant drop in September 2021, which could possibly be related to the September 2022 broad core update, but it's a year off from the provided data.
#3 Domain
- This site also experienced a drop in traffic around September 2021, which again might relate to the September 2022 broad core update, but the dates are mismatched.
- There's a peak in traffic during the first quarter of 2023, but it doesn't seem to correlate directly with the March 2023 core update.
While this is a general analysis based on the provided data, it's essential to consider other factors when interpreting the effects of core updates on website traffic. Other potential reasons for traffic fluctuations could include changes in content, site structure, backlinks, and many other SEO-related factors. A more in-depth analysis using a comprehensive SEO tool might provide a clearer picture of the exact reasons for the observed changes in traffic.
I will change a domain name and set 301 redirect to the new one. I will replace Wordpress with another CMS, but the content will be more or less the same.
