17 Tips for Better Facebook Ads: A Practical Guide for Affiliate Marketers

Getting better results with Facebook Ads as an affiliate marketer takes more than just clicking Boost. I’ve spent years experimenting with budgets, visuals, headlines, and audiences. I’ve watched new campaigns soar and others stumble. Here, I’ll walk you through 17 actionable tips that have helped me and can help you build real traction and boost your bottom line with Facebook Ads.

Introduction

When I started running Facebook Ads, I made all the classic mistakes. I aimed too broad. My visuals were hit or miss. Sometimes, I didn’t even set a clear objective. It took time, a lot of testing, and more trial-and-error than I care to admit. Through it all, I learned what separates forgettable ads from those that drive real affiliate commissions. Below are my field-tested tips for building better Facebook ads—whether you’re just starting out or looking to level up your existing campaigns.

1. Understand Facebook Ads Basics

It’s tempting to jump right into writing copy or picking images, but understanding the basics is key. Facebook offers a variety of ad types, from simple image and video ads to carousels and stories. Each format serves a different purpose: image ads are quick and direct, while videos can tell a fuller story. The Facebook Ads Manager dashboard can look overwhelming, so take time to explore it. Familiarize yourself with its main features like campaign structure, reporting, and the creative hub. You’ll navigate your campaigns much faster once you’re comfortable with the interface.

2. Set Clear Objectives for Every Campaign

Every ad needs a purpose. I learned early that running ads “just to see what happens” rarely works. The first step in any campaign should be picking a goal: brand awareness, website traffic, lead generation, or conversions. Each objective guides Facebook’s algorithm in optimizing your placements and spend. If your goal is to attract new email subscribers, select “Lead Generation.” For eCommerce, you might focus on “Conversions.” Always tie your campaign’s goal back to your affiliate marketing strategy so you can track meaningful results.

3. Target the Right Audience

There’s a huge temptation to target as many people as possible. In reality, targeting everyone means reaching no one. Facebook lets you hone in on users by location, interests, behaviors, and even pages they like (Core Audiences). You can also upload a list of emails (Custom Audiences) or create Lookalike Audiences based on your best customers. Spend time researching and testing different segments. When I narrow my audience and exclude users who are unlikely to convert, my cost per click (CPC) drops and conversion rates rise. For more ideas, see this Facebook Affiliate Marketing Guide.

4. Write Clear, Compelling Ad Copy

Facebook feeds are crowded, so your message needs to stand out quickly. I stick to straightforward headlines, focusing on the main benefit of my offer. Avoid jargon or hype; instead, highlight real value. Use a strong call to action (CTA) like “Sign Up Today” or “Get Your Free Guide.” Short, direct messages usually outperform long-winded ones. I often brainstorm several variations and test them to see what resonates. The best copy gets to the point and speaks to a real need or pain point.

5. Use High-Quality Visuals That Pop

The first thing people notice in a Facebook ad is the image or video. Blurry photos or generic graphics make users scroll right past. I use high-resolution images, bold colors, and videos that get to the point within the first few seconds. Canva is my go-to tool for quick graphics, and I always double-check specs Facebook recommends a 1.91:1 aspect ratio for images in news feed ads. Video ads can boost engagement, especially if you’re explaining a product or showing real results.

6. A/B Test Every Element

I didn’t believe in A/B testing until I saw how much a headline or image swap could change results. A/B testing means running two versions of your ad, each with one small change—like a new CTA or a different picture. Use Facebook’s split test feature within Ads Manager to set this up. Compare results, kill the ads that aren’t working, and double down on what is. Over time, you’ll learn exactly what your audience responds to and avoid wasting budget.

7. Budget and Bid Strategically

Set realistic budgets based on your goals and margins. I prefer starting with daily budgets, so I don’t overspend if an ad misses the mark. If an ad performs well, I increase the budget - slowly - to maintain results. Facebook offers different bidding strategies, including Lowest Cost and Cost Cap. If you want full control, try manual bidding, but most campaigns do well with automatic options. Remember, spending more doesn’t guarantee better results. Scale gradually and watch your numbers.

8. Choose the Right Placements

Your ads can appear in dozens of places from Facebook’s news feed to Messenger and Instagram Stories. I usually start with Automatic Placements and let Facebook’s algorithm serve ads where they perform best. Once I have enough data, I narrow placements to those with the highest ROI. For example, Instagram Stories often work well for visual offers, while Marketplace is better for product-based ads. Placement data helps you spend more where it counts.

9. Install Facebook Pixel for Better Tracking

The Facebook Pixel is a tiny piece of code that tracks users after they click your ad. It’s essential for affiliate marketers because it allows you to track conversions, build retargeting audiences, and optimize future campaigns. Setting up the Pixel on your website or landing page is simple, and Facebook’s setup tools walk you through the process. With Pixel data, you can see which ads and audiences actually drive sales, not just clicks.

10. Retarget Past Visitors for Higher Conversion

Most people don’t buy on their first visit, so retargeting is a must. I use Pixel data to show ads to users who’ve visited my site but didn’t convert. You can also target people who engaged with your videos or Facebook page. These users already know your brand, so conversion rates tend to be higher. For inspiration, check out these advanced Meta Ad strategies for affiliates.

11. Optimize Ads for Mobile Devices

Over 90 percent of Facebook traffic comes from mobile. If your ad looks great on desktop but messy on mobile, you’ll lose clicks. I use vertical videos and make sure images look good in both formats. Keep text short and legible. Always test your ads on different devices before launching. Mobile-optimized ads often generate lower costs and higher engagement.

12. Write Strong Headlines and Descriptions

Headlines are the first, and sometimes only, text people read. I keep them short, benefit-driven, and relevant to my audience’s needs. Descriptions should add extra detail without repeating the headline. When headlines and descriptions work together, users are more likely to click. I review copy from winning ads in my account for new headline ideas and keep a list of top performers.

13. Use Social Proof to Build Trust

I noticed a jump in conversions when I started using customer reviews, testimonials, and ratings in my ads. Social proof signals that real people have tried your offer and liked it, which eases doubts and builds trust. Sometimes I show the number of customers served or include influencer endorsements if they’re relevant. For affiliate marketers, even just mentioning a well-known brand or positive feedback can boost credibility.

14. Create Urgency and Scarcity

People act when they think they might miss out. I use phrases like “Limited Time Offer” or add countdown timers to highlight deadlines. Scarcity is especially effective for promoting seasonal products or flash sales. I avoid overusing this tactic, though it only works when the offer is real and the scarcity is genuine.

15. Track Results With Ad Analytics

Facebook provides a wealth of data, but it’s easy to overlook the most important numbers. I focus on cost per click (CPC), click-through rate (CTR), conversion rate, and return on ad spend (ROAS). The breakdowns tab allows you to drill down by age, device, and placement. If an ad is underperforming, I pause it, tweak something small, and try again. I also keep an eye on frequency. If people see your ad too often, performance drops.

16. Avoid Common Mistakes

Over the years, I’ve made every mistake possible: targeting too broad, using pixelated images, running campaigns for too long without changing creatives, and ignoring audience fatigue. Regularly review your ads and don’t be afraid to turn off underperformers. Take feedback from your audience seriously, and always try new ideas. If you want a broader perspective, see this guide on common missteps in Facebook affiliate marketing.

17. Follow Facebook Ad Policies

Facebook has strict rules about what you can and cannot promote. Ads that violate these rules get disapproved or worse, get your account banned. Always review Facebook’s ad policies before launching a campaign. Avoid making exaggerated claims or promoting restricted content. If you’re unsure, check your ad in Facebook’s Ad Library to see examples of approved creatives and language.

Bonus: Keep Learning and Stay Connected

Facebook ads are always changing. I make it a point to stay updated with new features, algorithm tweaks, and creative trends. Networking with other affiliate marketers helps, too. Thank you for the important tips and steps, Andy! It seems that you have the ads strategy all under control.

2

I was working on customer avatars last night to go with this research. I will be building out a new site with the most research I have done on the whos and whys.

2

That sounds great.

1) Are you making cartoon avatar images for their profile pictures?
2) Which tool(s) do you use for this, and why?

2

I am thinking go with photo-realistic because the more human your avatar is the more you will want to solve their problems. I used ChatGPT and wrote a strong prompt, followed its questions to make it better and then had it do deep research mode and it wrote me a virtual playbook of compiled research from over 30 sources.

ChatGPT is becoming a greater friend daily.

2

I use ChatGPT too, but I prefer Gemini for more advanced tasks and I set up Gems (AI agents) similar to custom GPTs to do specialized tasks for me with minimal prompting. Some of my gems I just feed one word or a short phrase and it outputs everything I need in detail, to the tee.

Good points to help our business grow.

Yes they are and it helps learning more about the full range of ads Facebook offers now.

Yeah trade restrictions stink but if you have an angle go for it.

1

Sure, I'll try again. I have been running ads for years with no results in terms of sales or signups. It matters what goals we have.

Make sure your customer avatar, which you can create in AI is deep and go as laser targeted on the right audience and your mission will end well.
