The View From Here

I live in a basement apartment. Yeah, I'm about to turn 65, and I live in someone's basement. Like a teenager that moved back in with his parents. But before you jump to conclusions, let me elaborate.

I'm not going to go into all the details that lead to my living here. It's a VERY long story, but suffice it to say - here I am. A little about the space - and I do mean SPACE!

It's very spacious down here. Besides my room, which is a pretty good size for a bedroom, there is a little area with a bar just outside my door. There is also a separate entrance in that leads up a short flight of stairs into the yard. I make sure to make plenty of trips up those stairs to spend some time in the sunlight. Besides, I have a dog and he needs his 3 or 4 walks a day, so there's my exercise.

There is also a large area under the rest of the house. The bathrooms's out there. plus a huge area that I have a video production set up with green screen, photographic lighting and my music equipment.

There have been times when I questioned my sanity for moving into the basement of someone's home. There are three other roommates who live upstairs and they're occasionally much too loud. There is very little light that comes in through the window which looks directly into the bushes that block the view of the lawn. And there is very little air circulating on its own. So I have to run the fan sometimes to get the air to move.

However, in the wake of the recent events throughout the nation, Hurricane Harvey's massive flooding in Texas, another devastating storm, Hurricane Irma which left the entire island of Barbuda uninhabitable, and then move on to wreak destruction in Florida,

fires burning out of control from Southern California all the way to Oregon, affecting the weather all the way into Washington and Canada....

...I got to thinking.

From my point of view, all I could see was a nice cozy room. Sure. It's in a basement. The house has central air and heat, but I don't even need it most of the time, because it's naturally warm down here in the winter and cool in the summer. I have enough space in my room for a bed and a little home office. There's a huge spacious area adjacent to my room. My roommates are rarely home during the week. hi-speed internet, a TV, hardly anyone from upstairs uses the bathroom down here, So I virtually have this all to myself most of the time.

One of my roommates, in an attempt to be insulting (I think he's jealous of my entrepreneurial lifestyle because he thinks I'm not working) calls me the "Cellar Dweller". Well, if that's my biggest problem in life, I'll take it. Because i have a unique point of view. Considering all of the troubles in this world, lately...

The view from here is just fine.

Count your blessings,

Thanks for sharing, Hal.

Great post thanks for sharing

The whys we get to some places are not the important things, the whats count, the most.what we are doing and the outcomes that we are creating it is about perspectives. One of the good things about being here is that we are creating new lifestyles. thanks for sharing Hal your post has helped me very much.

Hi Hal, I love your positive outlook on life! Sure, I know no-one can be positive all the time, but if one can appreciate small everyday blessings, I think it becomes easier to move forward in the tougher times.

I know we are all 'working towards a better life or more things', but enjoying and making the most of the present is important as well. Good luck and have a great day, Sue :)

We are the king of our dome regardless the size. Peace and quiet are what matters. Continue to build your business, Hal, so that others may see that all things are possible. Thank you for sharing.

The Medici started their vast banking network by lending money from a cellar office. :)

Well, if my online empire springs from a cellar, I'm perfectly okay with that!

You're the king of your own castle, Hal. :)

I'm more like king of the castle dungeon, but there are no locks keeping me here. After a nice long walk, I don't mind returning to the "Hal-Cave"

Haha! that's the way :))

Being self employed does indeed give you a unique point of view. More power to t!

It's great to be minimalist again, Hal!

I have found that the older we get the happier we get with less.

It's part of gaining wisdom (hopefully) over the years.
