Use a sidebar widget to make a clickable new tab open to others sites.

So i wanted to add a sidebar widget titled "Favorite Sites" and have a clickable link the site for my visitors. I also thought it important to open a new tab so they didn't completely lose my site. I wanted it on every page of my site; so I used the sidebar widget to make my own box of "Favorite Sites"

I have the html code to do it and here it is for you to use with directions on how to do this.

Maybe your want to be able to put your other sites on a site you made to promote it as a favorite site of yours and let people go to it and still have your other site in the browser?

Here is the instructions..

  1. You will grab a text html widget from your customize or widget area of your theme.
  2. Place where in your side bar you want it.
  3. Title your widget. (mine is Favorite Sites)
  4. Open widget and type or copy and paste the code directly below and erase the italic words. Meanwhile, filling the erased part with the site you want to go to individual url and then the words you want people to read as the clickable link.

<a href="http://www.the web site name.com/"

target=_ blank>Click Here the title you want people to click, like the name of the site</a>

Now just to review...

Just copy and paste the code above and fill in the italics area with the information it is asking for.

Notice the second italics area is what you want the actual words to say like click here and the site name of course written correctly with spaces between words because this is what people will see.

Now you may want to add another website link in the same widget below the first link.

To do that add this code in the next line under the first code.

<p>&nbsp;</p>

This will create a space for the next item link to be below it.

Now this is for the widget area and not your post/ pages links to other sites. You would not want to do this inside your article in the view or text area of your post/page. This is for a sidebar or footbar widget as far as the linking.

This is only for you as an option that will be on all your posts and pages as a sidebar widget like your affiliate banners. This is similar to making your own clickable banner.

I will have mine going to my other sites and the title of the widget as "Favorite Sites." It is a way to promote my other sites with a clickable link to them.

I will also use it for other sites I really care about that may even be in my own niche. For instance, somewhere I have guest written.

Or, somewhere I want to write for (this would look good to someone thinking of letting me guest write and they visit my site and see their link there on every page/post on the side bar :)

They will know I respect their work and have confidence in my own because I have no fear of sharing about them.

My visitor will feel it is helpful and nontraditional too; therefore feeling I am helpful in case I didn't answer what they needed (yet, lol). I do not fear Authoritative sites, they can help me with back-links.

The important part is my tab does not change in the browser bar because the code will open a new tab and when someone is done they can close that site and mine is still open.

It is similar to how you would do an outbound link in your article.

I saw something similar on a site I was visiting and really thought at first that she was odd for sending people to other sites lol.

A few days later I realized why she did it; because she wrote for them or they mentioned her articles on their site. The sites she had a widget with links too in her footer was for huge authoritative sites.

That most likely gave her back links which is why she is a huge site now.

I can't mention her site name because of promotion rules on WA but trust me, she has a huge list of clickable links to other sites plus her own including YouTube and stuff.

She is a site of only 6 yrs and she is on TV as a guest of prime time shows.

Anyway, i am going to use it now for my other sites I will be starting because they are are close enough in niche to do it.

Maybe I am crazy, so what so you think, am I?

There is much as to how to use the sidebar here; however, the missing ingredient is the theme. I am having neck pain and cramps because I need a theme that allows me a sidebar widget.

The stress in search without success activates issues in My Whipped Lashed neck.

Thank you for this. I've been looking for a way to add links on the sidebar for 'friendly websites', so to speak, and your tutorial does the trick ;-)

there are a lot of sites that this would be great for.. thanks for the info!

Yes it will help with marketing in some way I know to I wanted to remember the codes so I thought guess I will blog about it lol and always have them.

I'm not sure how good an idea it is as I've never tried it...but, I like it! It's probably one good way to get the attention of the big fish out there in your niche... title the widget as helpful links or resources...somewhere along those lines.

Maybe writing a post which mentions them and what you've found helpful or interesting from them would be a good idea too...and, then mention it to the site you're linking to either in a comment on one of the social media platforms or somewhere that you know they're likely to see it...I've found Twitter helpful in this way in the past.

Plus, it'd be a great way to show your readers links related to you and where else they can find you on social media...I know some themes have these built in, but some don't.

Anyways, crazy or not, I think you're on to something that just might work. I think it'd be very helpful to your site visitors if they wanted to learn more about the niche.

Nope, I don't think you're crazy...you're just thinking outside the box! Thanks for sharing the codes to do this and getting the wheels turning.
Best wishes :) Sherry

Thanks Sherry and great ideas. I thought about getting an authoritative site in my niche looking at me for a guest writer and what better way to pat them on the back then having a link to their site :)
