Doors... of Understanding

I have to admit, that I am a little bit slow to pick up on things in life. That quality has led to some significant detours in my career path that could have been avoided with some wise counseling and a few measures of clear thinking. But, since I can't travel back in time all I can do is appreciate the learning that has brought me to this point.

Where I Started

I started my journey and learning about the Internet in 2011. I think for most of us there's a catalyst in our life that helps us realize that we definitely need to do something different and so we start looking. In 2011 I was stationed at the US Army's storied 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbel,l Kentucky preparing for a deployment to Afghanistan. I was surrounded by some particularly poor leaders and I realized I needed to make a sweeping change in my career and the way I work in order to change things.

I Found My Goal

Funny things happen when you decide to change. For me, I had to decide for the first time what it was I really wanted, what was my goal going to be? You would think that someone would have considered this before they were in their mid 40s. But not me… it took a good solid six months of thinking self-examination and reading a lot of books, one of which was Tim Ferris's "The Four Hour Workweek". I was finally able to distill my goal down to one phrase "the freedom of time and place". After 12 years in the US Army I was ready to choose where I wanted to be and what I wanted to do with my time. It didn't take very long to figure out that an Internet based business would be the Best approach to achieving this goal.

Several things I learned while establishing my goal.

  1. Quitters are never successful.
  2. The higher your level of understanding the greater your success will be.
  3. There is always room at the top.
  4. As long as I am alive, I can learn and do new things.

How I'm Reaching My Goal

In one of the numerous courses I purchased, I heard a guy use this example: "if someone told you there was $1 million behind a door and all you had to do was kick down the door would you do it?" This phrase really resonated with me because everything about the Internet and computers was completely and totally new. I knew absolutely nothing. Everything I learned was a struggle and it felt like I was kicking down a solid oak door mounted in concrete. And to make things worse every time I kicked down one door, someone was there putting up doors right behind it!

Keep on Kicking!

I have now kicked down hundreds of "doors of understanding". Each time I broke through a door, I found a "block of understanding" as I continue to stand upon each new block, I am able to kick harder and faster at the doors. Soon, I will reach my goal. But there remain more doors to kick down.

My hope for anyone who reads this is that you will never give up "kicking down doors" in building your understanding to achieve your success.
