Keeping a Blog Checklist

Here’s a checklist of things to keep in mind when writing your own blog:

Offer something readers want or need: Inform, educate, challenge, persuade them. Move them to action.

Consider how you can help readers solve a problem, achieve a goal, or understand a complex issue.

Write what you know: How-tos, explainers, and handy pointers are a great way to show off your knowledge.

Use your tagline or About section to show readers how and why you’re an expert.

Double-check your facts, back up your opinions, and cite any sources for info obtained elsewhere.

Assume your readers are in a hurry and give them what they came for.

Write a short, snappy headline as a guide to keep you focused on your topic.

Don’t repeat yourself or veer off track.

Use hot topics as a springboard to talk about your own subjects.

Don’t jump on the news bandwagon unless you have a fresh take.

Post predictably—at least twice a month—to build an audience that makes a habit out of reading you.

Add “blog post” to your marketing/content calendar and tie it in with business goals.

Capture post ideas as they come to you, to create a backlog of topics for the future.

• Consider your goal when determining the length of your post:
• Short posts of 300 words are more likely to get readers to the end, click links, and generate comments
  
• Long posts of 1,000 to 1,500 words get shared more on social media
  
• Posts of 2,500+ words rank higher in search engines
  
• Break up dull, gray blocks of text by:
• Including photos or videos
  
• Formatting your post as a list, or with bullet points
  
• Including subheads
  

• Include links and invitations at the end of the post to boost engagement.
  
• Ask a question at the end to invite comments.
  
• Strive for a unique, recognizable voice that sets you apart.
  
• Develop your voice by reading other blogs, and practicing writing in other voices.
  
• Choose topics you’re passionate about—they’re more fun to write and to read.
  
• Consider subjects that draw you into conversations with strangers, or on social media.
  
• Give some thought to your publishing ethics. Consider your own rules around:
  
• Remember that some negative comments come from people who just enjoy being rude.
  
• Be open to legitimate comments that may inform you when you’ve goofed.
