Glen's WordPress Tip #3 - How to Set a Static Home Page.

By default, the WordPress setup sets the front page to show the latest blog posts. There are times when you might want to have a static home page.

To accomplish this there are a few things that you need to consider:

  1. Where will your blog page now reside?
  2. Where will the static home page reside?
  3. What settings need to be changes to accomplish this?

Where will your blog page now reside?

The first thing you need to know is that when you make the settings changes I discuss below so that you have a static home page. You will need to have a location for your blog page.

So the first thing you will do is create a new blank page and call it something like Blog.

Once we make the new settings you will change your WordPress to point to this new blog page.

Where will the static home page reside?

Just like the Blog Page you will need a page for the home page. So you will need to create a new page for the home page. Unlike the blog page this page will be designed how you would like your home page to look

A drag n drop builder really comes in handy for this part.

I wrote these posts on Drag-n-Drop builders:

Why I Use Drag and Drop Builders

The OptimizePress Drag and Drop Builder

What settings need to be changes to accomplish this?

Now that we have our home page and blog pages designed we will now need to go into our WordPress Admin and under settings->reading.

  1. First click the radio button to set static page.
  2. Select the new homepage you created in the drop down as shown above.
  3. Select the new blog page you created in the drop down as show above.

That's it quite simple once you know how.

'There are times when you want to have a static front page'

Yes, I'm sure there are, now that you say so! Can you share some examples of why it would be beneficial to do this? Thanks!

Sure thing Marc,

This can work very well in many scenarios. Let's say that your site is promoting wealthy affiliate. You can use the home page to talk about yourself and how you can help others to have success building an online business.

If you had a baby site you could use the front page to talk about your site a bit and point people to key products and posts.

It's just a more custom way to run your site. You will find that most people will have a static page. I have done both static and blog page and it is something that you test to see what brings the best results for your site.

Hope that helps,
- Glen B

Hello Glen, that helps a lot. Basically, I understand that in some cases, a static front page can make more sense than the standard Wordpress 'Bloggy' site front. I think I'm going to prefer using static front pages because that's what I'm used to using in the past. Not that what I did in the past is any sort of wondrous cosmic history ;) thanks for your informative reply; it's much appreciated.

My Pleasure Marc!

Not all builders work well on tablet...
What would be your best choices?

Hi Fleeky,

I personally use OptimizePress because it is designed for Marketers. Also it is fairly easy to use and has many templates that you can choose from that are Marketing Related.

I have the iPad Pro and it works flawlessly on that so I'm sure it will work good on most tablets.

Hope this helps,

It does a lot!
Golden tip, thank you!

Anytime Fleeky!
