Now Is The Time
It's easy in a time like this to set aside tasks that seem to mean little among the greater, world-changing events that are currently unfolding. Events involving health, safety and civil rights are center stage and rightfully so. Health and safety are important, civil rights are important and I would like to add that the future we envision for ourselves and families is also important.
But how do we take up the banner on these important, necessary issues without neglecting other commitments? Create and set goals.
There is so much "newness" happening that it can be difficult if not mentally draining to successfully embrace it all. Every adult has been dubbed a teacher, homes have become offices and places of business and no one knows what normal is anymore. There's no way to avoid it, change is here and planning for it will be our greatest weapon against being static.
Success doesn't just happen, it's planned. The old adage that says, If you fail to plan you plan to fail, is relevant right now. We are in the most unprecedented time in history where unexpected events are creating unexpected opportunities. Necessity truly is the mother of invention. The way we used to do school, work and leisure is no longer applicable. There is no normal, we have to create one. Hence, opportunities for new ideas and products to help us adjust to our new reality are imperative and unavoidable.
Creating and setting goals is not a new ground breaking thought. We've heard it for years. We may have even engaged in the act at one time or another. We've probably spewed the motif in discussions with our children. What's new about goal setting is the urgency of the times. Change is happening quickly. Solutions are needed just as fast. Because the current events are happening on a global scale, everyone can take advantage of how to shape the new normal.
Now is the time to visualize what the future would look like and what role you will play in its creation. Now is the time to be more dedicated than ever to dream big and map out how to make your dream a reality. Now is the time to focus deliberately and consistently on making positive moves forward. Now is the time.
Goals are easy to set and the good thing is they can change and should change. One writer boasts he rises at 4:30 am completes his morning routine of evaluating the previous days activities (based on his goals), exercising, meditating, daily goal setting, and targeted reading. By 9am he has a clear picture of how he will spend the rest of his day. This system works for him. It demonstrates his commitment to getting things done. Now 4:30 is not feasible for many of us but developing a routine that is goal-driven is.
When setting goals, think of where you want to end up.
Backwards planning. If you know where you want to go, it'll' be easier to create a plan to get there.
Be consistent. Work your plan and don't stop. Consistency develops habits.
Make changes when necessary. Rigidity can rob you of creativity. If the plan isn't working closely examine why, and adjust. (A word of caution, too many deviations can mean you need to revisit your end goal.)
Celebrate small successes. To keep encouraged pat yourself on the back each time you accomplish a goal. It is a great motivator.
Get an accountability partner. Everyone needs a cheering section. Find someone who believes in your success and will honestly tell it like it is when you're falling short.
Give yourself permission to fail. No matter how much we plan, things may not work out as we envisioned. That's OK. Failures can teach valuable lessons. Get up and try again.
Those who flourish in these times, will be those who view the unexpected as opportunities. They take advantage of planning and seize the day.
NO more waiting. You can do this. Stay healthy and safe, support positive change and seize opportunities to build your future. Now is the time.
