Open office, a trojan?

Ok I have seen others here referring to Open Office and recommending it. But I am leery now because of what I have just experienced when trying to download the Open Office File. I run AVG anti-virus on my computer and when I tried to run Open Office to Install I got the following message...

When I clicked for more info on the Anti Virus Alert screen it showed me that the file from Open Office is classified as a trojan (see image below):

So is it a trojan? Should I trust it? I want to be able to create videos and powerpoints for my website, and thought this was the way to go but now I ain't so sure.

I think you need to be careful where you get it from, some lmight offer it with a few nasties attached but Open Office itself should be safe.

Yeah I think I got the right one now, WilliamBoyle gave me a link and I downloaded last night. Had planned to practice with it yesterday but got called into work and just got home. So Hopefully later today. Thanks and Hope you have a great week.

Open Office in and by itself is not a trojan or malicious. However, this AVG thing is, they try to sell this crap to you. It's difficult to get rid of it.

Google 'how to remove AVG" and read a few instructions. Here is one link

http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-AVG-Secure-Search

Then download the free trial version of Malwarebytes

https://www.malwarebytes.org/

and run a FULL SCAN (Important)

This may take up to 2 hours, depending on how much stuff is on your machine. After the scan finishes, just follow the instructions and "remove all files"

Scroll through the detected list and look for AVG, you will surprised what you find even after you did the first regular removal.

After that, open office is ok to use

I so agree AVG should go and any tool bar it may have on her system.
It is a tracker! Open office is fine.

Best!

I do so agree getting AVG of her system is a good thing. I would run mb 2 or 3 scans, it's great for malware but it is not a replacement for a top end antivirus solution.

If you have an issue getting AVG off your system fire a shot. It kinda likes to hide sometimes...lol.

Hi GemAngel777 I have been running open office now for at least 2 years on 3 different windows 7 pc's. I have Symantec Internet Security and Malwarebytes pro. I have never come across any issues. You may have a false positive I get them sometimes. Download it from Apache website https://www.openoffice.org/ you want version 4.1.1 I did this reply in open office. Hope this will help. Micro$oft office way over priced when you see what this office suite can do for free.
