How to of Blogging...

The more I learn and write, the more lists that I have started to keep me on track with my websites. These lists are everything from ideas for my site, to keywords for new sites, to my basic blogging don'ts, etc. Recently I have put this last one together in a more readable format into the following categories.

  • Treatment of Others
  • Treatment of your Readers
  • Your Personality should shine through
  • Mode of Writing
  • Accessibility
  • Blog Appearance
  • Blog Thoughts

This list I have put together from my own blogging experience and is simply of my opinion. Remember that there aren't set rules for blogging. With that being said, I would like to share my list with you. I hope it helps.

I would love to hear any feedback you have!

Awesome! Great job, I actually read the whole thing.

I noticed that your images aren't optimized. You may want to do that for better search engine activity from the BIG G! LOL

Thanks for the feedback. I have a ton of pics and have never optimized them. Basically didn't know that I should. But makes sense. What do you use to optimize your images? A plugin or software. Not sure how to easily go back now and do that.
Gena

I added a plugin to optimize by images. I can't tell any difference. If you have a chance, can you look at my site again to see if you can see a difference on the images. I would appreciate it!!

Hi Gena.

This is a purely personal opinion (I am by no means an expert), but as you've asked for comments - I hope you take it as constructive.

I don't (as a reader) like being told what to do - so the repetitive "Don't..." sounds like I am being given a telling off.

I like to read what other people have done, and what they personally do.

In that sense, I would prefer to read your post along these lines:

"I've been blogging for xxxx and this is what I personally do to keep me on track...

I don't... abc

I don't... xyz

etc "

That way you're giving your readers an insight into what you do - you're not dictating to them what they need to do.

I know you're introductory paragraph sets the foundation for what your post is about - but the rest still sounds too dictatorial for me.

I 100% know that some people will want to be told "Do this, Don't do that..." etc - but as I said, just a personal opinion.

I expect others will disagree with me, and some may agree - but that's how I read your post.

On the aesthetic front - with so many "don't..." - I would maybe bullet point them, just so they are read as a list - rather than individual sentences.

I think the intent and the content of the post is fantastic and spot on - just the wording for me could be a little softer.

I hope that helps?

All the best, Mark

Mark,

Thank you so much for your honest feedback. It is exactly what I was looking for.

I have rewritten some items on my post. Hopefully it has a softer note to it. I never want to come across as telling someone what to do. After all, I am still learning every day.

If you can, please give it another look. I would be happy to hear your thoughts!

Thanks again,
Gena

Hi Gena - thank you for that - sometimes when people ask for feedback, they don't always really want it, or appreciate honesty, even if it is just someone else's opinion. So I'm really pleased you took it as constructive.

I'm learning every day too - and the thing is, everyone will have different opinions - so it's important to me, that I take everyone's views when I ask for them, and pick out what I like and agree with.

To me, your post reads really well now. You're making it clear it's your list of Don'ts - and adding the bullets makes it more list like.

I did spot one typo in the Treatment of others section:

...To me, it is important to thing about... (should that be "think about")

Great post though - and a really good list for others to take from.

All the best, Mark

Oops on the typo! Thanks for catching it.
Take care,
Gena
