My YouTube journey so far - June Reflections
Hello lovely WA community!
I hope you're all well and working hard!
I just wanted to share a quick update on my YouTube progress this past month – especially since it was advice I got from doing some courses here that nudged me into action! (Thanks Jay, Vitaliy and Eric)
Although I've had my channel, for a while, I’d never really committed to using it regularly. But at the start of this year, I decided to create a few more videos as I kick-started my websites again. However, in June, I really set about trying to make a difference following the advice of fellow WA members. I originally started posting short Facebook reels to boost my Facebook pages and then I decided to upload them to YouTube too – to see if it would make a difference; and it did!
So here are a few numbers (June 2025)
- 27 short reels uploaded (all 30 seconds or less)
- 8 longer videos (30 seconds to 3 minutes)
- 5,937 views for the month
- 7.2 hours of watch time
- +4 new subscribers
Traffic spikes happened around the 5th, 11th and 29th of June – usually when I’d uploaded several reels close together. It’s not massive growth, but it’s a solid, encouraging start – and it’s a far cry from how things looked before I was posting more consistently.
Obviously, I have a very long way to go before I start to monetise anything here, but I'm very encouraged by the numbers and I'm learning all the time.

How I create my videos
Heads up! I do have a background in video production, but honestly, you don’t need it, and although I know how to write scripts, set up shoots and use Premiere Pro to edit, I have not done any of those things to create the videos I'm talking about here.
In fact, I only used 2 tools that anyone can access. I think that these tools are so intuitive that anyone can start creating lovely, on-brand content with just a little bit of time and some creative curiosity and I encourage everyone to have a go.
You don't need lots of experience, but you do need to be willing to experiment.
Short reels (under 30 secs):
- Created entirely in Canva
- Using their stock video footage and AI-generated background music
- I add in my own affirmations or quotes, usually with simple transitions and animated text
- I do pay for Canva Pro, but I find it well worth it since I can use the Pro images and videos and I don't have to worry about choosing free options - it's only about £20 per month
- Longer Videos (30 secs – 3 mins):
- Made with Lumen5
- Using free stock video and music which is available on their site
- These are more narrative in style, with no voiceovers and only using text
- I use the free version – and it’s surprisingly good because it can create a script from a blog post and you can customise most things.
There are some things I wish I could do which are a bit more advanced but if I really want to do those things, I can use something like Premiere Pro. However, for these short reels and videos, these tools are great - easy to use and beginner-friendly.
If you want to see examples of some of the things I've done, you can visit the channel through the YT link on my profile.
So far, I've only concentrated on one website's content since there are only so many hours in the day!
What I think is working so far
- Posting to Facebook first, then uploading to YouTube
- Short, uplifting messages with visual impact
- Batching reels in advance so I can stay consistent
- Letting go of perfection – getting something done and published is better than striving for perfection. I remember Jay saying that this type of content has a very short shelf-life and I've found that to be true. If it's not seen within a couple of days, then it's lost, so it's not worth worrying over, and you can clearly see this from the analytics graph. It's more important to be consistently posting something than working on your pièce de résistance!
Shout-out and thanks to the WA community
I also wanted to give a shoutout to all the training and help I'm receiving here at WA. If it hadn’t been for a few encouraging video modules here in WA about video content, Facebook and YouTube, I might still be “thinking about it” instead of actually doing it. So thank you, truly, for the inspiration and practical ideas!
Over to YOU!
Clearly, I'm not going to make it onto "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!" as a YouTube celebrity anytime soon (thank Heavens!) and I have a very long way to go to monetise anything. However, "You have to be in it, to win it" as the saying goes, so at least I've got my foot in the proverbial door, or my fingers caught in the clapperboard, but I'm on step one of the ladder. Ooh, I do love a few metaphors!
Anyway, I hope that this will also inspire a few of you to join me in my video journey. Are you using video in your online business yet? Have you tried repurposing your content as YouTube or Facebook Shorts?
I recommend checking out some videos in other relevant niches so you can see what others are doing too.
I’d love to hear your experience – and advice, as always, is very welcome.
See you next month for more updates and I'll be posting soon about my Facebook journey.... Got to get that traffic from somewhere!!
Thanks for reading
Gail and Sparky, of course, who helps me with all of my content 🦊✨

Gail (and Sparky!), thanks so much for sharing your honest update and workflow! I’ve been thinking about starting my own YouTube channel, but I’ll admit, what’s holding me back is all the decision fatigue around video editing and voice-over tools.
There are so many options out there! I’d love to use my own voice for narration, but tools like ElevenLabs (and the endless other choices) have me a bit stuck in “research mode.” It’s reassuring to hear how you’re keeping things simple and focusing on getting content out there, rather than chasing perfection or getting overwhelmed by tech.
Your practical approach and willingness to experiment are giving me that little push I needed. Maybe it’s time to just pick a tool, try it out, and learn as I go! Appreciate you sharing your story, it really helps those of us who are on the fence. Looking forward to your next update, and who knows, maybe I’ll finally jump into YouTube right alongside you.

Hi you two! Great to hear from you and I'm pleased that my story can offer a little inspiration. I totally understand the decision fatigue you mention. I think that there are so many tools out there that we all start to worry if we are using the 'right' one, thinking sometimes that there is a 'perfect' one that we should find. However, I think it reality, it's a bit like shopping at a supermarket. You can get bread and milk at ALL the major ones, and as a beginner, it doesn't matter where you shop. Only when you become more discerning or choosy about what you need (like Oat/rice-milk, or butter from pink cows eating only potato leaves) do you need to worry about the nuances of the system!
I'm just experimenting and I think that if it doesn't work, I can always delete something. I've discovered that these things don't last that long anyway so best just to start and see what happens.
Let me know how it goes.
All the best.
Gail
That's great, Gail. I'm definitely going to check out your website as soon as I finish this comment. I don't use YouTube yet. I just posted my first video blog on WA and it was a very frustrating process. I have post on YouTube before and its so much easier, but I don't make my posts public. I do plan to get a YouTube channel for my online business in the future. And I will take note of using Canva and Lumen5 for the process.
Your post was very insightful for me. Thank you.
Hi JarieLyn. Great to hear from you and I'm pleased that the post was helpful. It's taken me 7 years to really get going on YouTube and that's only really in a small way, but it's a start. I think you have to do it when you feel ready, but all the best for when you do. Take care. Gail
Cool post - I feel like I have been there with you.... wat a month.
I am yet to move across into YT or Facebook.
Intrigued by your comment re Facebook post and then follow to YT.
Works?
I have to bed down some mechanics still - but i am up to give this a go in the near future & your post motivated me a lot!
Thanks @gail.🌟
Hi Mark. Thanks for your comments here. I was making the reels for Facebook first and I already had a YouTube general channel, but I rebranded it to reflect my website and then thought I'd just upload the videos there too since I'd already made them. It seems to work as I've got many more views on YT it seems than on Facebook and a few additional subscribers to boot. I think the age old "consistency is king" adage works though so it's up to me now to keep following up and post regularly.
Good luck with your own journey. It can seem a long slog uphill for little reward at the start but I'm told it will pay off so I'm trusting that!
All the best. Gail
Hey Gail, well done on your achievements. Just a tad bit of advice if I may, your long-form videos on YouTube should typically be at least 8 minutes long for the algorithm to favor you and for a better chance to place your AdSense throughout. Keep going and keep it consistent!
Thanks Hein. I'll remember that. Like I said, I'm just getting started but that's a good point and I'll let you know when I've made my first 10-minuter! (If that's a word!)
That sounds great. I could do an audit on your YouTube channel if you like... and give you some tips on what to improve on or change.
Hi Hein. That would be very kind - as I said, I'm just learning YouTube and I don't think I've got the SEO right at all but it's one step at a time for me.

Good morning Gail,
Thank you for your blog post and documenting your story, etc, I think this is not only good for you, but it's also good for others and this is what Wealthy Affiliate is all about!
I'm always interested how other members do certain tasks, especially YouTube, as it's a platform that I use frequently.
I must admit, I have never used Canva for video production, probably because I have used Camtasia for years. It does amaze me how much Canva can do, I probably need to learn more about the software. Although, having said that, Camtasia seems to work well for me.
I must admit I'm not a Facebook fan, if I'm honest, I really dislike the clunky platform! Having had an account taken down for no reason or no explanation, I'm kind of reluctant to use it again. It's one of those platforms where you can never go back to where you left off or find the content that you want to. However, in the early days, I used Facebook pages, which were quite powerful and then Facebook advertising became available, they stopped promoting their pages, as Facebook wanted everyone to use paid advertising. However, I do believe that Facebook has become stronger recently, so maybe I need to try it again.
I'm looking forward to hearing your updates in a months time, Gail.
Have a great day.
Roy
Hi Roy. Great to hear from you and thanks so much for your comments and insights here. Like I've said, I'm just experimenting with all these things to see what works for me, my niche and my audience.
I agree about Facebook being difficult to find things but I don't really see it as something that people search on a lot. I see it more as a snapshot of ideas to grab attention and point people over to my website or YT channel. I think that is because the content there has such a short shelf-life - people either see it within a couple of days, or they'll never see it! I suppose it's just like 'horses for courses' and that each platform has it's one merits and challenges that we will discover for ourselves.
Glad to have your support. Gail
Good morning Gail,
It's a pleasure, Gail, I believe we can learn so much from what other members are doing. I also believe that different things work for different people, it can also depend on a niche.
I know where you're coming from, regarding Facebook. You are right, it should be about the traffic and about grabbing people's attention, etc. It's definitely worth trying out to see what works for your niche. I think different platforms work for different niches. For example, if you were a top financial adviser, you would probably use LinkedIn, rather than Facebook. Whereas, if you're talking about fluffy cats, then Facebook would probably work better over LinkedIn!
Wishing you all the best and keep on documenting your journey!
Roy
Will do. Thanks.
