The Heat is on in Australia.

Temperatures have soared above 40 degrees for the past week, some areas hitting 50 degrees. It is hot and the only way to survive it is to do what this koala is doing and sleep it out. For some though a splash of water is needed The heat saps all your energy till there is none left and you feel completely wrung out. Even the animals are struggling to cope. We at least have air conditioning in our homes but our animals are at the mercy of the weather no matter waht it brings from freezing cold in Winter to extremely hot in Summer.

Some animals find ways to deal with the heat others will just lay down and die. It was reported that a mob of wild horses in the Northern Territory have died from heat exhaustion and dehydration in a dry river bed . You can read the news article posted in the Guardian here

Kangaroos have been splashing in the water troughs to try to cool off.

In my garrden a koala fell from high up in a gum tree from heat and dehydration. I tried to revive him with some cool water but it was too late, sadly he died.

This little koala in an animal park is being refreshed in a tub of water.

We all have to find ways of dealing with the extreme temperatures. For me, I keep the air conditioning on and watch a good movie on Netflix.

I hope if it is hot where you are that you are able to stay cool and conversely if it is the opposite extreme that you are able to stay warm. We have to be adaptable to all kinds of conditions. Lets just give thanks that we can, with all the modern aids we have and spare a thought for those not so well equipped to handle the intense heat or bitter cold.

I feel for the poor critters in that heat.

Quite the opposite here. Frightening frigid temperatures.

It is challenging, you can always add extra clothing for warmth but there is a limit to how much you can take off and if you happen to be a koala with a thick fur coat you get to wear it all year round, whatever the weather.

The drought is bad in Australia.
This is the third wet season in a row that there has been little rain upon the range.
The western sun in the afternoon is burning all the garden plants. Hundreds of road trains are crossing the country with food for sheep and cattle. One caught fire coming across the desert yesterday.
Thousands of Fish are dying in the dried up rivers.
Many dams are empty.
Towns have little water left and bottled water is all that they have.
The odd storm with not much rain in them.
The worst drought in a hundred years.
Bad floods are due in a couple of years.
Tom.

Hey Tom it is all doom and gloom down under. Thank you for your graphic description of how it is going where you are. We are certainly living in trying times. All the best as you seek to survive the conditions. Dorathea MacKellar was right when she descried Australia all those years ago. ." I love a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains, I love her far horizons, her droughts and flooding rains."

We certainly have the 4 extremes down under hot and wet in the northern tropics, dry and sunburnt out west and cold and windy in the south. Even at the start of summer, we had snow on the Alpes.

And that is just the beginning. Certainly, agree with that along with the other statement you made about the heat. The heat yes it is hot but it is the dry heat that is worst. as it also makes it harder to breath especially for the animals, young children and elderlies I know in Vic many areas were without power the other day so no Air cond which makes it worse.

Last year it was hot as well but I feel this year is worst and that rain we get because it is usually short, makes it worse. sure it may water the garden a bit but at the same time, the heat comes back and actually damages the plants let along bringing added humidity that is worse than before the rain.

Hi Judy,
Oh the poor sweet little Koala. Yesterday we were driving home from a getaway we had down the Great Ocean Road and the temperatures hit 46. All I could think about was how were the native animals coping, as I'd read about the horses dying.
We were lucky enough to have the pleasure of meeting many kangaroos whilst on our little holiday, but I couldn't help but worry about how they've doing.
Hope you're doing well.
Cheers
Melissa

Thank you Melissa for your comment. You are not so far away from us. We are on the South East coast, near Wilsons Prom.
If you are down this way you should call in. .Fish Creek is becoming quite a tourist hub.
You can't help but feel for the animals with the current weather conditions.

Wish I could send you some cooling weather from Alaska! We have enough of it here. Hope you cool off soon.

Alaska is cold but beautiful. We were there a couple of years ago, but even Alaska is changing with the warming climate. We have rain forecast for next week, so here's hoping.

1

It's supposed to rain here tonight, but on the day I am to fly to Juneau to get my California flight, it says heavy snow. I just love traveling in the winter!

Hope you get your rain.

Great post, Freisia. Here on the other side of the world (US) we're having bitter cold temps. Stay safe, my friend. Carol

Thanks Carol. I have seen the reports of super heavy snows in Europe is that happening where you are? The weather seems to have a mind of its own but as humans we can adjust and deal with it. Stay warm, light the fire and snuggle up with a good book.

Our weather has been very strange. It's in the 50s and raining one day with flash flood warnings, then snowing a foot the next! We here in my part of Western NC have dodged the bullet with the last two storms, which brought high winds, ice, and power outages. Not such a nice season...i'm ready for spring, but guess I'll just have to wait a while!

I would like to visit Australia one day, I will be sure to plan the trip for your spring or fall. Being from Canada I find that when temp climb over 32C I don't want to go outside.
Please take care.

Murray

1

Friends of ours were telling us yesterday that friends from Canada are here now and have have been up in the tropical north Australia heat and bad humidity and are going back home to the minus cold of Canada.
The graft for the weather on the news has just been extended another 5 degrees Celcius.

1

Hi Murray, we loved our trip to Canada and I am sure you would equally love Australia. You are right about the seasons. The Spring and Fall are the best times to be here. The lowest temperature I have experienced in Winter is 2 degrees centigrade and the highest where we are would be 42 degrees.

2

Do you think that's beyond our control?

I am not sure, there have always been strong variations in the weather but we are seeing more extreme weather events now. but a lot of the devastation may be due to over development. For example, cities become catchments when the rain comes and the streets become like rivers. I am sure human activity has exacerbated the weather we are experiencing.

1

That fake development is through to almost all nations. People don't adapt to the natural flow and cycle of nature.

Pretty hot here in Adelaide, Judy.

I know it was extremely hot in Adelaide but you pushed it over here. We did not get to 46 though. Stay cool Marion, its not over yet.

1

We recorded 46.2C yesterday in Adelaide, highest since 1930s.

It was really hot in Adelaide, how did you deal with it. I guess Glenelg was packed.

I hit 40 today here in NSW but know that you guys and also in Vic got much higher I think tomorrow will be not too much different. Take care and keep hydrated yourself as well as the animal around.

Andre

2

NSW is copping it today I believe. We are back under 30 degrees and it is very pleasant. We will be celebrating Australia Day with our neighbours this afternoon so hopefully it will stay as it is.

1

Hi, Judy certainly true went to the shops this morning at 10 am and it was already 33C far too early for that type of heat.

As soon as you get outside the heat just hits you hard.

At the moment it's 36 and nowhere near the peak heat time.

Guess I am staying inside for the day

Take care

Andre

You are all talking about the heat but it is a dry heat. Along the coast and up QLD tropics the humidity makes it worse. During summer if you close up your house up in North Queensland and go away for two weeks when you get home the inside of the house is full of fungus from the humidity.

2

Certainly Nth Qld is renowned for that humidity as well as WA
