I think of the Alternative Text as the area in the photo edit portion of your page or post where you place the article keywords so that it helps the SEO of that page or post on your website.

For example, if I do a search on Michelin RV tires, and that keyword phrase has been placed as an alt text in the photos on my website, when I do a google search for Michelin RV tires, if I have done everything else right, the photos should show up.

In this example they do! This is just another small way to help your writings rank in the search engines. Jay recommends having at least one image with the alt text containing your keyword/keywords.
