Why Should Online Marketers Care About Regression Analysis?

Hi WA Friends!
Most of you know me as a physician who plays guitar and loves all things musical, but what you probably don't know is that I'm also a huge math nerd! Lol 😆
Let's take a look at a cool tool that can use your customer data to predict what they will do next! It’s not as complicated as it sounds and way more reliable than guessing! It's my "mathematical crystal ball!" Haha
What Is Regression Analysis?
Basically, regression analysis is a way to understand how different things are related. Imagine you want to figure out how different factors influence what your customers do, like how much they spend when you give them a certain discount. Regression lets you see how these factors connect and helps you predict what might happen in the future.
Types Of Regression Used In Marketing
There are a few types of regression that can help you as a marketer. The most common ones you’ll come across are linear regression and logistic regression.
- Linear Regression is all about predicting something that changes continuously. For example, it can help you estimate how much money a customer might spend based on their past purchases and demographic info. It’s simple but very useful.
- Logistic Regression is used when you’re trying to predict a yes or no outcome. It’s similar to A/B testing in that both can help predict user behavior, but logistic regression does so based on multiple variables, while A/B testing is about directly comparing two options. You can read my recent post on A/B/ testing here:
Example: Using Logistic Regression Analysis For Cart Abandonment
Are you having a problem with people abandoning their carts on your e-commerce site? This happens when customers add things to their cart but don’t buy them. Using logistic regression on customer data, you might find out that people who shopped late at night were more likely to abandon their carts. So, you can target those customers with special morning discounts!
How Marketers Can Use Regression To Understand Customer Behavior
Predicting Future Sales
One of the best ways to use regression is to predict future sales. By using past data like customer purchases, seasonal trends, and demographic details, you can use regression to predict how much money your campaign will bring in. This way, you can see which future campaigns are worth spending more money on.
Customer Segmentation
Not all customers are the same, and regression can help you group them into different categories. Say you have a bunch of data, like age, browsing history, and past purchases. Once you have these segments, you can use auto-responders like AWeber, ActiveCampaign, or GetResponse to send personalized messages to each group.
For example, if one segment is made up of frequent buyers, you can use an auto-responder to send them exclusive offers or loyalty rewards. This kind of tailored communication helps build stronger relationships and can lead to higher conversion rates.
Using regression analysis to create customer segments and combining it with auto-responders ensures each customer gets the right message at the right time!
Optimizing Ad Spend
Regression can also help you figure out how to spend your ad budget in the smartest way. If you have data from Facebook ads, Google ads, and email marketing, regression can help you predict which channel will be more effective for certain audiences. This way, you can focus your money on what’s working best!
Common Challenges
One common problem is overfitting. This happens when your model fits your historical data so well that it doesn’t work well for new data. To fix this, keep your model simple and test it to see how well it works on new data.
Another challenge is data quality. Regression models need good data. If the data is inaccurate or incomplete, your predictions won’t be good. Always double-check your data - bad data leads to bad results!
Tools For Using Regression Analysis In Marketing
You don’t have to be a data expert to use regression. There are lots of tools that make it easy. Programs like Excel, Google Sheets, R, and Python offer basic regression features. If you want something more robust, tools like IBM SPSS or Tableau let you do regressions without needing to code.
I used IBM SSPS extensively when I was earning my master's degree in medical informatics. It does a fabulous job with all types of regression analysis, but it's pricey! I purchased a three-month membership with a substantial discount through Northwestern University.
If you’re using a CRM like HubSpot or Salesforce, they might even have built-in regression tools that help you see trends without a lot of extra work.
Tell Me What You Think
So, there you go. Regression analysis isn’t just for math nerds like me. It’s a practical tool that can help you understand your customers better, predict what they’ll do, and make your marketing work smarter!

Knowing customer behavior in marketing and having some ideas of why carts are abandoned would help us plan our offers.
Thanks,
Sami
Absolutely, Sami - especially if you have an extensive email list, which you can further segment according to preference and behavior! 👍😎

Knowing regression analysis techniques can help online marketers increase sales.
The behavior of customers matters.
Whenever there is a trend, it gives marketers an opportunity to improve the quality of their work.
Great share, Frank!
Have a magical weekend! lol

Hi Frank!
Yes, please share more of your thoughts on how to not only figure out what's happening with our online businesses but also gain traffic in these days of changing Google SEO.
That would probably be helpful to the WA collective. The music posts are a nice diversion too! 😊
Have a great day!
Bruh! See Frank you taught me something my college class has not! Saving this article. Thanks for the post.
Edit: Regression Analysis is what i speak of. Right now i am learning how to analyze a company and its worth.
Thanks, Shakida! 🙏
I'm so happy you found it helpful!
IBM SSPS is awesome for doing all types of regression analysis. I use it to help factor out chaotic acoustic data in the obstructive sleep apnea research I do.
