How Big Is Your Bass? Show Me Yours And I'll Show You Mine!
Hi, WA Friends!
Have I gone a little crazy? Well, I've been posting some "non-musical" WA blogs of a rather technical nature, and my wife said that has to stop! Hahaha
What's The Point Of This Post?
To give you a little break from the day-to-day rigors of what most WA community members do, of course!
So, let's talk about the 17-string bass guitar that Elwood Francis plays with the band ZZ Top. Elwood, who has been the band's longtime guitar tech, replaced Dusty Hill as the bass player after his untimely death back on July 28, 2021.
He first used the guitar during a 2022 concert in Huntsville, Alabama. The bass is more of a prop than a serious playing tool, but it adds a fun visual element and a touch of absurdity to ZZ Top's already wild live shows.
Check out the video!:

Elwood has admitted that he only uses the outer five or six strings.

Elwood apparently found the guitar while surfing the internet. He says it is a Chinese-made knockoff of the 18-string Ormsby that Jared Dines plays.
Dines criticized the bootleg guitar on Instagram, to which Francis replied: βThe jokeβs on me βcause I have to play that bootleg POS!β Lol

If I had that guitar, I'd use it for two-handed tapping (tapping the strings on the fretboard with the fingers of both hands), sort of like a Chapman stick!

What About My Bass Guitar?
So, NO, I don't have a 17-string guitar! π
I only have one bass guitar. It's a Fender 1969 Musicmaster bass that I got in high school. I used it to play in a "World Music" band featuring drums, keyboards, saxophone, accordion, and bass (me). They weren't interested in a guitar player, and I was just learning, so it worked out great. We actually sounded pretty good! Lol
The Musicmaster Bass is a variant of the Fender Mustang Bass (which was introduced in 1966 as a companion to Fender's shorter-scaled, 2-pickup Fender Mustang guitars). The Musicmaster Bass was introduced in the mid-60s and was originally marketed as a short scaled, easy to play student model. Rather than the split-coil design of the Mustang Bass, it featured a single-coil pickup, which was actually a 6-pole Stratocaster guitar pickup under a solid plastic cover.
And, yes, I still have it! I use it now and again to record bass tracks to something I'm composing, and my bass-player friends love its "punchy" sound, which comes from the fact that Fender used a Stratocaster (six-string) guitar pickup in its construction.

Wow! That 17-stringer looks a bit over the top. Think I'll stick to my little standard electric bass...I love it!
Had to chuckle -- until I noticed who wrote the post, saw "bass" in the title and immediately thought you were about to tell a fishing story. Then I saw that it was from you, and knew you meant the musical instrument. A fun post, Frank.
Haha, Thanks, Fran! π
Have all the fun you can playing music! ππΆ

Haha, who cares, right Jeff??
I use people better than me for inspiration and motivation while having all the fun I can!
If it weren't for players like Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, etc., I would have stopped playing the guitar a long time ago. Well, maybe not. Lol π

The first time I ever heard of ZZ top back in the day, Frank, my question was how big are their BEARDS!
I don't think anyone would be capable of playing those inner strings unless they grew a third arm. πΈ
Appreciate the post!

NOW it makes sense, Frank! All this time, I was thinking - if he's holding it, how in the world is his left hand ever going to reach those higher strings?
I do remember seeing a guy in a band once playing a steel guitar in the same manner (at 3:10) in the Jared's video - where you place it on a stand.
The Chapman stick method makes sense too!
They must be heavy! With all of that stretching he needed in the beginning.
Thanks for the videos! πΈ
You're welcome, Isaiah.
I love the way Tony Levin and Trey Gunn, who were both in King Crimson, play the Chapman stick.
Do you remember Jeff Healey, the blind guitar player who played his guitar lying flat on his lap like a steel guitar?
You can make any guitar lighter by creating hollow areas in the body and covering it with a wooden (typically maple) cap.
This is commonly done on Les Paul guitars, which were originally prized for the natural sustain produced by their weight. These days, high-gain amplifiers, compressor pedals, and "sustainiac" guitar pickups can make any note ring on as long as required.

OOPS, I should has read further!
Bass! Okay!
That is some stellar bass there!
I definitely like yours though! Well done. Mine are all just Cheapies, but I still like playing them on occasion!
Happy Sunday, and an excellent post!

Hahaha, Jeff! π
I'm betting that a lot of WA members with fishing websites will jump into this post and then say, "What the hell!" Lol π€£
Have you seen ZZ live? ALWAYS a great show!!
It doesn't matter how much your bass guitars are worth, Jeff, just how much fun you have playing them! π
Have A Rockin' Sunday! π€β‘οΈπ€

I never had the opportunity, Frank!
I have a lot of fun playing them, especially since they are not expensive. I even gave Samantha one of them too!
I am having a rocking and 65 headed to 70 degrees Sunday, so all is good here!

Happy Sunday, Frank!
I chuckled at your title as I knew weβd be in for something fun! That multi-string guitar is insane. Canβt imagine playing that. I think the bass guitar is a much better choice lol!
Rock On,
Susan ππΈπ€
