I Got Visitors! Now What?! [Direct Email Marketing Tips]

Have you ever seen visitors coming in to your website and then...
Nothing...?!
A few months ago, a post from my first website (pre WA), started getting crazy amounts of traffic. Approaching 1.000 per day, to one post alone...
I panicked!!
And now what? I had a lead magnet in place, but was getting 0.013% subscribe rate...
This was my second lead magnet...
During my panic, I compromised my principles and registered for google ad sense. Fortunately, after a few days and seeing how much I was earning (around $5 / week or less), I got back to my good sense and removed it.
I didn't like the compromise to the user experience. Honestly, it doesn't make sense to me to place Ads, but I felt I was 'wasting' those visitors.
You see, I had studied so much that I knew I couldn't just have visitors coming in and out...
Sometimes ignorance is a bliss.
In this article, I'll tell you a few of my mistakes (so you can avoid them) and at the end give you some of my best direct email marketing tips.
The Lead Magnets
My first lead magnet was an infographic style PDF I designed myself through a template (with my horrible design skills), but based on a lot of research.
I thought I had compiled into that infographic a great amount of helpful information, maybe I had, but no one cared...
Take 2 - The Email Course
I created a 7-day email course, which took me months to write. I just can't bring myself to present information to people that is not backed up by research.
I still have that course being offered to visitors, the same post is still bringing in visitors - not 1k, but an average of 150/day - but the optin rate is still crappy.
I have everything optimized according to the industry data and studies, but it's not converting. I found out why. The lead magnets are not directly related to the post.
The funny thing is that post is the least focused I have and that took me the least amount of time to write. It's solely based on my experience, not research, but it's the one that took off.

Take 3 - Sometimes Less is More
So I tried again, and I created a lead magnet only for that post. This time it was the easiest and fastest of them all. All I did was record a video of what was described in the post, some basic editing (my first video), created a landing page with a screenshot of the video (write down this tip) which opens a pop-up to subscribe when trying to play, and then leads to the actual video.
Boom! Optin rate up to 20%
Sometimes less is more...
What's Next?
Ok, I'm getting people to my email list, now what? Crap! I need to start promoting stuff to them...!
What should I promote? Ah, that's a cool product... write email... send... *crickets*
Open rate 5% - "Whaat?!"
Right, start studying email marketing...
Ohhh... they don't even know me... I didn't follow up with them, most of them don't even remember subscribing.
That's fine, I read some cool books, already know some stuff about copywriting, I can grab their attention. More emails... open rate 8%, getting better.
You get my point...
Basically nothing's next cause I started it all wrong!
That's the focus with which I started this post.
Yesterday I wrote a post offering a free logo design tool (link below), but with the intent of telling people starting off to focus on content.

Here's the next thing you should focus on, email marketing.
But my advice is, start producing a lot of content, make that a habit, 1 post per day, 3 per week, as much as you can, but as soon as can produce a few more posts than 2 per week, save them and use that time to start learning about email marketing.
My Best Direct Email Marketing Tips
As soon as you can, get yourself a lead magnet, and I'll leave here a few - very basic - tips for lead magnets and list nurturing, hopefully it will save you from being lost like I was.
1. Must be very specific.
2. Offer a specific solution to a problem and solve it.
3. Must be easy and fast to consume.
4. Must be easy and fast to implement.
5. Create a 3-day email welcome sequence.
6. Email your list at least once per week - you can and should be very casual and personal in your emails - don't promote stuff in every email.
Maybe I should have made a case for email marketing first, but I write here very casually and without any major thought behind it. That's the good thing about writing here at WA, no pressure as there's nothing to sell, only the intent to help.
These are the direct email marketing tips I have for you today.
Have fun with them and I'd love to read your thoughts.
