Ideas to Create your Niche

I just gave cjdavies a suggestion and I thought it would make a good first blog post here on WA.

How do you pick your Niche?

First it needs to be something you feel some passion about. Since you are struggling to pick one, I'm going to make the assumption this is your first website and niche. It was for me, afterwards I suspect it will get easier. (Little secret -- I've already got my second one, now).

Ask yourself a couple of questions:

First a few guidelines:

  • Don't try to make it the perfect niche. You are here to learn. I wanted mine to be just right. Nike motto, "Just Do It!"
  • Write your answers down. You want to look at the answers.
  • Don't make this complicated.
  • Speak your niche statement out loud. It sounds silly, but doing this engages a couple of other senses or parts of your brain in the process. NO WHISPERING IT. Say it.

Okay... here we go.

Who do you want to help?

How do you want to help them?

Why do you want to help them? (What makes this important for you?) If it is just cause you think it will/might/could make money. Try again.

Now make your answers into a statement.

Here is MY Process

Here are my answers (with some explanations):

1. I want to help people that only have one income source. I have a number of friends and family. All are married and all have two incomes. Both people are providing and income to the household. They don't even have to be equal incomes, but there are two incomes. I'm single I have one income.

2. I want to help people that only have one income. I needed to create a second income stream. I can't keep trading time for dollars. 8 hours a day at XX dollars an hour.

3. Why did this become important? How did it become a passion? I was out of work for 4 months. I had savings, I don't live paycheck to paycheck. I'm a consultant and it took 4 months to get another contract. 4 months!!! That really opened my eyes. I need another source of income. I lost my job I want/need a side income so that I don't starve or lose my house or car until I get another job.

My niche became Single Income Earners that Need a Second Income. I realized there are other people out there in the same boat.

Once I had the niche, building the website became easy. I've just started it (Mar 2019).

Okay -- nobody steal my Niche!!! I hope this post helps some people.

Ingrid

You are super welcome Ingrid, et.al. I'm starting my journey with WA.

That is great advice and a great niche John. I followed a similar path though in a totally different niche/niches.

If we can focus on helping people solve a problem and use personal experience to do so we are halfway to where we need to go to have a successful online business. Then you just need to learn SEO and implement it.

Jessica

I'm excited to learn all this. Not an area I've focused on in IT.

Thank you Jessica.

I also recommend people be careful when they pick a domain name and keep the following in mind:

Make it short! No one will remember a long, rambling domain name.

Make it simple. No acronyms or abbreviations or cute wordplay. They might make sense to you but no one else can figure them out.

Make it relevant. That way it is easier for your customers to find you and remember how to get back later.

Try to get a .com if possible since that is what people expect. If a .com is already taken you don't want to have the .net version since everyone might just end up on your competitor's .com site.

Jessica

That is also great feedback about the website. For now, I'm on siterubix.com.
