Eight outfits are standing beside one perfectly good sentence, arguing about who wears it best. 😏
Oh yes. Technically Correct. Terribly Dressed. And I think we should demonstrate the styles rather than lecture about them.

My previous text wandered through formatting, markup, structure and semantics.
Then JD left a word in the comments.
Layers.

Yeah....
Because of course they are.

A text can be structured, semantic, accessible, hypertextual and interactive all at once.

They are not necessarily different kinds of text.
They are layers doing different jobs.

Which should have settled the matter nicely.
It didn't.

Because you can get every layer right…
and still produce something nobody wants to read.

Welcome to style. 😏

Same Thought. Different Clothes.

Let us take one perfectly innocent thought:
AI can help people write faster, but the result still needs human judgment.

Nothing particularly controversial there.
Now let us get it dressed.

Generic

AI is a powerful tool that can help people create content more efficiently.
However, it is important to review AI-generated content carefully to ensure quality and accuracy.

Perfectly respectable.
Perfectly clean.
Perfectly…
zzzzzz.

It said something.
Technically.

Informative

AI can reduce the time required for tasks such as outlining, drafting and rewriting. Human review remains important for checking accuracy, context, relevance and whether the final text actually meets its purpose.

Same thought.
Now it brought a clipboard.

Explanatory

AI makes writing faster because it can generate and reorganize language in seconds. But generating language is not the same as understanding why a particular reader needs it. That is why human judgment remains part of the process.

Now we know why.
The clipboard has acquired a teacher.

Transformative

Perhaps AI's greatest contribution to writing is not that it writes for us.
It forces us to notice what writing was doing all along.

Choosing. Discarding. Questioning. Listening.

AI may accelerate the words.
But suddenly the human has to become more deliberate about the meaning.

Same subject.
Different destination.

Scientific

Generative AI systems can substantially accelerate text-production tasks. Yet, output quality remains dependent on factors including model performance, prompt context, source reliability and subsequent human evaluation.

The sentence has put on a lab coat.
Please do not spill coffee on it.

Literary

The machine filled the page before she had finished her coffee.

A thousand words.
Smooth. Polished. Ready.

She read them once.
Then again.

And quietly deleted the sentence that sounded most certain.

It was wrong.

The machine had been faster.
She had been paying attention.

Ah.
Now the sentence has a pulse.

Story

Tom had spent three hours trying to write the introduction.
Eventually, he asked AI.
Eleven seconds later, there it was.

He stared at the screen. “That's much better than mine.”
Then his wife walked past. “Why does it say you've been doing this for twenty years?”

Tom looked again.
He had been doing it for six months.

Eleven seconds to write.
Twenty minutes to discover who he had apparently become. 🤭

Poetry

The machine runs ahead
scattering words down the road.

I follow slowly,

picking up only
the ones I am willing
to carry.

Which One Is Correct?

All of them.
And none of them belongs everywhere.

That is where style becomes more than decoration.

A scientific paper dressed as poetry may raise an eyebrow.
A bedtime story dressed as a technical manual may lose the child before the dragon arrives.
And an affiliate article dressed entirely in generic AI prose may be structurally immaculate, semantically correct, beautifully marked up… and utterly forgettable.

Style has a job.

It changes pace. Distance. Authority. Emotion. Expectation.
It tells the reader, before we explicitly tell them:
This is how I want you to meet this thought.

And Then It Gets Messy

Because we don't have to choose one outfit.

An informative article can contain a story.
A scientific explanation can become literary for three sentences.
A poem can explain.
A story can teach.
A transformative passage may emerge in the middle of something completely practical.

Layers again.

JD, look what you've done. 😏

Perhaps good writing isn't choosing the correct box.
Perhaps it is knowing what the text needs here.

And then here.

And then knowing when to stop dressing it altogether.

Because after formatting… markup… structure… semantics… accessibility… interactivity…and style… we eventually return to those annoyingly simple questions:

What is this?
Why is it here?
What does this person need from it?
Where should they go next?

And perhaps the cheekiest one of all:

What can I remove?

Structure before decoration.
Purpose before style.
And occasionally…

let the poor sentence wear jeans. 😏
