What Are Your Thoughts About Freedom?
In the U.S., our day to celebrate freedom, July 4, has passed. Yet my thoughts continue to dwell on the holiday's meaning. When we lived in Kodiak, we created a sign that hung above a living room door. From Ralph Waldo Emerson, it said: "If you cannot be free, be as free as you can."
Think about the concept of freedom. It is not something that we are given. In this country, it becomes our choice, and we can be as free as we wish.
No matter what our circumstances, we must always remember that nothing can deny us the freedom of our own mind. There is no charge for our thoughts, no one can take them from us, and no one can force us to think in a certain way.
When we embrace freedom, know that the true understanding of this precious state tells us that we now have the most important thing in the world even though we don't own it. Believe in the value of living in a way that shares freedom with those around us.
The great concepts of the world are simple, and can often be expressed in a single word. Freedom is one such word. You can surely think of other powerful concepts expressed with one word, such as justice, mercy, or hope. Though simple, they become complex when we realize their infinite importance.
Never take for granted this wonderful gift. Do not think of it as a right, though it is one that should be extended to every human being. Instead, consider your freedom as a vehicle that will allow you to do the right thing.
Use your freedom to make the world a better place. Embrace the belief that to become truly patriotic, you must believe that freedom gives dignity to the individual, and thus has importance for all people.

I agree with your post, Fran. but Freedom is never Free. It is something that could easily be taken away from anyone, EXCEPT the Freedom of our minds.

We fight for our freedom everyday, if it were FREE, we would have lost it a long tjme ago.
The concept of freedom iis different to each generation, yet, we are losing our grip, and our fredoms are slipping, no, being dragged away inch by jnch...
Our FREE WILL is still ontact, and yes, we do have the freedom of thought....for now.
Many of us are so electronically connected that we dont know what to do if the power goes out.

Even though I am on a “workation” this topic is so important to me that I had to comment.
Our freedom is slowly being taken from us almost on a daily basis and it is important we all stand together and try to stop what is happening.
As you know, I live in Vietnam and there is more personal freedom here for me than when I lived in Australia.
Unfortunately we are also being stripped of the freedom of our minds. And there are many who are not even aware of it.
Lol, that’s my rant for the day.

I agree with you Steve! Reminds me of the Paul Simon song, Slip sliding away. The title, not so much the lyrics, although one stanza stands out:

There are little lights and rays of hope around the world and I pray it all comes together when needed.
I think we all have to do our little bit when the time comes. We have to stand rather than kneel.
I value my freedom, Fran...however, the meaning has become disrespected as though it was a dirty word...
Our privacy hangs by a thread, and I do what I can to protect that.. yet, unless something major happens, our freedoms here in America, and our freedoms as human beings will continue to be shredded until nothing is left....

Our freedom is important, and we don't consider this fact often enough.
My freedom is slowly being dissolved with the present lawlessness that is creeping into our daily life.
Yes, there are other things sneaking around and taking our freedom, but the loss of my feelings of personal safety is kind of new, and most noticed this morning for me.
