Hello everyone!

This is my first blog on WA. From the title, you can see what I'm trying to do here on my first blog post ; )

Having done some training, getting hands on starting two websites, things still feel a bit unreal. Thanks to the community on WA that makes me realise there are all these real people doing what I want to do!

Many thoughts go through my mind when I sit in front of my laptop and try to write something. To sum them up, they are usually "hesitation":

  • I'm not really sure what I'm doing. Do I have anything valuable to share?
  • I'll wait til (fill in the blank) happens
  • What if no one finds it and it sinks to the bottom of the ocean?

3 Steps to Overcome Hesitation

Step 1. Remember why you want to do this

Having a strong personal reason puts everything else (hesitation, fear, self-doubt etc) into perspective. Those feeling are fleeting but what you want truly resonates with yourself.

I want to set up an online business so I can generate income anywhere in the world and I can spend more time physically with my family and friends. The internet is great but when it comes to family and friends, being able to share a meal or take a walk together makes a lot of difference. That's why I want to move my work online, and physically I'm free to spend time with the people I love.

My 3 year-old nephew who lives in HK loves me a lot even though I've only seen him for less than 30 days in his whole life. On Skype he always asks, "Why are you not coming back yet?" It hurts every time I hear that.

Step 2. Try Mel Robbin's 5 Second Rule

The 5 second rule is simple - when you know doing something is important to you (Step 1) but somehow you "don't feel like it", accept that you are never gonna "feel like it", count "5-4-3-2-1" to yourself and just move physically and go do it. I've tried it, it works.

You can watch Mel's TED talk here.

Step 3. Practise accepting things as they are

People say "don't be a perfectionist" as if it was an easy thing to do. It's actually not very actionable.

Rather, think "it is what it is, what do I do now?". then use the 5 Second Rule (Step 2) to get done what appears in the mind. The key word here is "practise". Changing a habit takes time, so keep practising and enjoy the process.

Hope this helps and happy writing!

Fiona

I like your blogged Fiona,... I just join but so many things that I am learning.... Thanks

Great blog Fiona! Yes. I have to keep on reminding myself why I'm doing this. I too would love to spend more time with my family and friends and be able to work from anywhere in the world.

I heard of the 5-second rule but I will go and watch Mel's talk.

Practise makes perfect. I'm nowhere near perfect but I am practising.

Wishing you all the best with your online journey.

Thanks JackieSmith!
