I Believe I can Fly

The single word I’ve noticed most here at Wealthy Affiliate during the past couple of weeks is “belief”. Simply put, if we don’t believe we can succeed, we won’t.

Let’s look at Google’s mission statement.

"Organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."

It’s huge isn’t it? But, huge or not, it has enabled Google to achieve their belief that they could do it. OK, there is more involved, but belief was the starting point.

Beliefs can make you mentally strong

Here’s a short story from one of my mountain bike (MTB) rides last week.

I don’t always listen to music while I ride, instead preferring the sounds of nature around me. On this day, I did listen to my MTB playlist and was charging along a forest ridge trail toward a particularly challenging and technical downhill section and thinking about how to approach it and get down faster than I had before.

About two-hundred meters before the sharp right turn into the descent, the punk version of the song, “I believe I can fly” started. It starts out very gently with a Hawaiian beach sound. Just before I made the turn, it exploded into a fast rhythm.

“If I just believe it there’s nothing to it. I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky . . .”

Somewhere inside of me, I already believed I could slay that hill and the music amplified the belief. Suffice to say, I let out a very loud whoop at the bottom and increased my speed into the next section. The feeling was beautiful.

I have belief in my business too and a wonderful sense of knowing that I will achieve the success I desire regardless of the challenges I meet along the way. I have the creativity, focus and discipline to solve problems and drive forward.

The Opposite Can be True

Lack of belief can make you mentally weak. If I believed that I wasn’t going to be successful, that would come true and I would abandon the journey at some point.

Google and other successful entrepreneurs didn’t abandon their beliefs and they reaffirm them frequently. Here are three sets of beliefs borrowed from other successful people that reside on my notice board and I reaffirm them daily. Sometimes more than once.

  • Decisiveness, action-taking and speed contribute to success.
  • I can learn any new skills I need to succeed and keep my business on the forefront.
  • I can earn the respect and cooperation of anyone whose help I need.

Note the emphasis on action. They emphasize going beyond what some people are willing to do.

Bedros Keuilian CEO and Founder of Fit Body Boot Camp sums this up perfectly.

“The whole point of this is to prime yourself to want to take these actions even when they are uncomfortable. You will do this because you believe that the rewards will come. No, the rewards will not come immediately. Yes, the reality will be a long and difficult road. That's precisely why you need deeply held, empowering beliefs to push you forward even when your plan falls apart. Focus on developing your core beliefs, and you will have the power to overcome any challenge on the path to empire”.

I Believe I Can Fly!

See you up there.

Steve

About believing to fly many years ago I dreamed that starting to run would then take off my feet from the ground flying high. I dreamed more than once. I remembered this when I looked at your post. Will we have limits? Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Claudio. Your comments got me thinking about limits. I prefer the word challenges because there are always plenty of ways to positively overcome a challenge. Limits seem a little final, as though getting beyond them is difficult or not possible. Often the words we use make a difference to the way we look at things. Take care & have fun, Steve

That was a power ride! Before you can achieve anything it has to be achieved in the mind first.

Thanks Stanley and yes absolutely :-) Steve

Dream...,struggle ... victory...
the struggle is the action.. love the post
