Hi,
I am an Australian and currently I am living and working in Shenzhen, China (just over the border from Hong Kong which is my quick Western 'getaway' location when I go a bit crazy here)

I recently moved from Chengdu in South Western China where I was teaching.

It is an intense experience changing jobs and moving in China and this requires a 100% focus. It is expensive and time consuming and starting a new day job here in teaching meant I had to stop my IM work for three months to just get through the process and become familiar with the demands of the new job.

My vision and goal is to cease teaching and possibly move from China in 12 months working full-time in internet marketing. China is an amazing and dynamic country with many opportunities, but it can also be frustrating and puzzling for a Westerner. Things are changing fast in China and the old China is long gone in the big cities and centres.

I had to stop all of my IM activities for three months to get through the move here, but this forced me to take a detached look at what I had been doing and how I was setting myself up for failure and paying large sums of money to IM 'Gurus' for the privilege. It was like hitting a wall and forcing myself over it to start again. I stopped programs (saved money pouring out of my account on useless subscriptions) and decided to get real and focussed. I had run an analysis of the programs I had been involved with and the one that stood out was Wealthy Affiliate, so I decided to drop everything else and focus solely on this. Best decision I have made.

So that is where I am now. It has been hard having to make this adjustment but it has saved me from losing even more money and maybe giving up if I had kept going he way I had been.

Its not always easy and you learn that the path is like anything worthwhile we do in the offline world too. It takes time and effort practised daily, but the difference is you are getting the whole picture and progressing with certainty if you follow through the training as it is laid out.

Thank you for you support. It's appreciated!

Hi Eric
I notice you are living in Shenzen (beautiful city) and I'm planning to move to Guangzhou soon. So I just want to ask does WA work over there or are you using VPN? Also, as I know that you can't access Wordpress over there, what do you suggest using instead?

My computer skills are very limited, so I do want to follow the training programme on here and use the same software WA uses.

Thanks in advance if you can answer my questions

Hi Eric,
I did just google cell phone text ads and it seems it is not a good tactic here in the U.S. It is considered spam and potentially illegal.
See attached article. http://blog.halfabubbleout.com/blog/bid/343586/Text-Message-Marketing-SMS-is-Now-Illegal-Companies-May-Face-Fines.

Thanks for having the conversation however. I seem to be fortunate in that I do not get any text ads on my phone. So, I was not too informed about what the text ads were all about.

Hi Randell

Thanks for the message and thanks for the information on latest rules.

I looked ay the link. That is interesting. I noted the example of 7-eleven. From what I read about the new rules this is pretty much how I was doing it and how the service provider works (the new rules that is). The message always asked for an email address to optin or the recipient could just ignore the message and nothing further happens.

The company I trialled is called Buzzcity. It has been around a long time, it is well established and services globally. I have not been using them for a while but I am sure that they would be aware of any changing rules in the US and each country they service and would comply accordingly. They served over 910 million texts just in the US alone in August!

The company is called BuzzCity. I can't put the URL in because of WA spam rules but just Google the name and you will find them no problem.

Eric,
When I see your name, it brings a SMILE to my face. You certainly do bring experience and feedback for novices like me. If you had not responded to my welcome message, I never would have suspected what is happening with the cell phone texts in Asia. Where can I get more information on Cell Phone Text ads and what the vendor's offer is. Guess I will have to Google it.

Hi Eric!
Following you now. I read your comments on Kathy331 site (Solo Ads) and see that you are knowledgeable in Internet Marketing and have tried a number of things including working with Udimi. They appear to be a pretty large organization. Large of course does not equal good but unless you make the trial you can not know. Thanks for your input. Not only did Kathy learn something but I did also.

I envy your ability to spend time in China, learn the language and make contacts (business, friends) for the coming years.
All the best to you!

Hi Randel,

Thanks for the message. I am not as experienced as it sounded :) but I started out using paid methods for list building and I went at it hard testing a lot of methods including using globally targeted text ads on mobiles via a company in Singapore.

This proved to be the cheapest and best for targeting where leads were coming from, so it is much more accurate cheaper per lead than doing Solo Ads. The leads are fresher too not having come from someone else's exposed list!

I liked it also because more people are using Ipads and cell phones than desktops or even laptops these days. It works well because people will be on transport somewhere or in a cafe in a more relaxed frame of mind and they will get your little ad. They will be less likely to be distracted and stressed with a task like you would be on a desk computer opening emails so they have time to muse about the offer, be intrigued and give some thought to responding if it is something that interests them. That is my opinion anyway and my results panned out.

Cell phone text ads can target a country or even states in a country anywhere in the world, where as with SoloAds you don't really know what you are going to get. With SoloAds a list owner might tell you that 70% of his/her subscriber list is from the US...but you still don't know for certain!

With cell pop up ads you only pay for the click which if memory serves me correctly is usually less than 1 cent. I recall my optin cost was something like 17 cents to 25 cents per optin depending on what country I was trialing. This is much better than Solo Ads which I recalled cost me 80 cents to $1.30 or more per optin.

I learnt about this cell ad system through a paid course and it was designed for CPA offers where you need a very low click cost and laser targeting to make money. I found it was excellent for quality list building, and much cheaper per lead!

I have been sitting on it since then and I will soon start to use it again for the paid traffic component of my WA site. I intent to share the system details on WA with a training at a later date.

For now, just be careful with SoloAds. Do small runs and test your results for list optins vs actual sales. I would be cautious of doing too many campaigns with one provider. As per my message to Kathy, see what you can find out about where most of the contacts from the list are from with a provider and if there are new ones added daily.

Remember that the list owner is also pumping his own offers into the list and this would be his first priority, not people that he would sell clicks to. I know that saavy list owners expose different portions of their lists to SoloAd offers just like a farmer will rotate his fields so as not to make any area non-yielding, but lists do burn out. You need a very large list to do this effectively though and you wonder how many real buyers are amongst the optins you get. Sadly I found the sales results vs optin costs were not encouraging with my trial.

China is a whole other ball-game. From an internet business perspective, it is a bit like being in another universe (apart from the language and culture). As an example, look at a Western marketing site or more markedly a Western bank site and see how lean and well designed the site is, especially the homepage. Then log into a China based website for a Bank here (not the Western arm of the bank) and checkout the home page. You will see the page is stuffed with information, adverts, deals, scroll stuff, animation or what ever else they can fit on. You can get a headache staring at it LOL!

Chinese based sites remind me of a Greek friend I once new that told me that when a Greek sets up a shop they never leave any space empty and don't care about overall appearance. If there is a bit of shelf or floor you then put something on it for sale....ever a small box of sweets if there is room on a ledge. If you have been in a Greek convenience store (or Chinese one for that matter) you will know what I mean. Same with the websites. It's a whole other mindset in approach.

Take care and regards,

Eric

Hello Mr EricBray, will I be able to access my account if I travel to a country that is not allowed on wealthy affiliate?

Hi, Sorry for a late reply.

I would optimistically answer 'yes' if you use a VPN.

I have not tested this in a fire-walled country that WA blocks, but I suspect it will work as it works here in China for me where sites are blocked here. At end of this I give my reason why I believe this to be true.
The important point to note is that a VPN will not show your true location if use a double encryption 'stealth' system.

- The originating location, your IP address, will not show as the server point that you select to use. What will appear is the VPN server location that you choose from dozens of options around the world. It could be a server in Australia, the US, UK, Germany, South Africa etc etc. This is what you want and I am sure it will work as your true location will be invisible. You could choose a server in your own country that you have left and where you set up a free account and the WA firewall would most likely detect your access as if you had not left home.

- Your ISP in the new location will also be prevented from throttling or screening your data and will give you a high level of security with anonymity on the net...vital here in China.

There are many other advantages including helping to speed up slow data feeds in countries where the internet is compromised such as China but I won't go into them here as the issue you are worried about I have mentioned in the first tab item.

The only caution I mention (and why I am 99.99% sure this will work) is that using a VPN will throw your bank into a spin and you might find that if you log into your home bank in another country and they see the server location is in say, Ukraine, they will probably block your account access! The banks will detect the unsual server location as a possible attempt to access your account that you are not aware of. I have been locked out of Paypal and my bank account in Australia some time ago until I figured out that when you use the VPN for accessing financial accounts you must select a server location back in your home country and then the bank will not see this as unusual and this has worked fine to date. That is why I believe it will work with no problem to access WA in a place such as India or another blocked country if you move there. Simply select a server location that WA has no issue with such as one in the US.

I have tried a number of VPNs and China regularly sweeps the net here and actively blocks VPNs so that they cease working. I have found one that remains reliable and always seems to beat the game here. Its funny, because it can work on a laptop on your home service and then they block access on handsets or Ipads in free Wifi in places like Starbucks. This provider always has another solution ready to go and I have not been locked out yet.
I can't give you the link here due to spam rules but I will send it to you in a private message. Hope this helps! Cheers, Eric

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the message. It is interesting living and working in China. It is such a vast and variable country (and at times frustrating too.. LOL) China is one of those magic places where you can start a whole new life from scratch at a later time in life and find that you are doing better than you could have dreamed possible. English teaching is the main thing for Westerners here, but there are many other things that Westerners get involved with too.

Chinese people have massive spending power of the sort that we used to have in the West in maybe the 60's. Everyone is busy making money and spending it! Things happen so fast here. Development seems to happen at 3 or 4 times the speed (such as the speed that buildings go up) but I have found that the downside can be that some of China feels like being on a movie set back-lot and I notice that difference when I go to Hong Kong where buildings are older and made to last, maybe up to 100 years or more - but not on the mainland.

One of the things I have come to realise is that learning to speak Chinese is the smartest thing you can do in general for language. Though the country is trying to learn to speak English as fast as possible, Chinese is the most widely spoken language by sheer numbers in the world today.

It's a mysterious, frustrating, perplexing, amazing country and people. One thing I will say about China too. They are NO threat to the West. China has no interest in war of conquering lands and people though they themselves have been cruelly assaulted many times. The Chinese really are only interested in getting on with business, life, making money and having the latest Western fashions and toys. That's about it!

Take care.

If you can help people, you can create a successful business doing so. This goes for absolutely any niche Eric.

Over the years I have personally been involved in many niches and the same principles held true. If you help someone, you build trust and once you have trust, you can generate revenue through your promotions. Not until then.

That is what you are going to learn all about here at WA and the proper strategies to create a business online. I look forward to working with you and if you need a hand with anything moving forward, simply drop me a reply here and I will give you a hand.

Yeah, that is a good approach. You can work towards becoming an expert within any niche and you can build a business doing exactly what you say. That is the approach we have taken over the years not only with WA, but with any website that we create.

Put the visitor first, offer them help, build trust and at that point you can make recommendations.
