Bad Timing?

Hi, WAers,

We're living tough times. Our economies are suffering due to the quarantine imposed. Many people haven't been able to work while others have seen a reduction of hours and thus pay too. Those who can work from home are the lucky ones.

I'm sick of hearing about the coronavirus. It's on TV and online 24/7. There's no other subject people talk about. That's why I've been thinking of quitting the media for some time. I just can't stand it anymore. This will be the last time I talk about this.

Is It Really a Good Opportunity?

I've come across several posts on WA saying that this is the best time to work from home and build our sites. There's some truth to that, but we also have to consider something very important: our niche.

If your niche is health-related, you've most probably hit the jackpot! People are concerned about their health more than ever. This is the perfect time to make money off of it.

But what about the rest of us? It seems like some niches won't see any growth for quite some time. In my case, my niche is travel-related. Like fellow member Mickey mentioned in her blog yesterday, no one is looking to travel these days. As if building a site and making it grow were not hard enough, now we have to face this. The worst of all, this is just the beginning. No one knows how long it will last.

What Should We Do?

I'm at a loss as what to do. Should I continue writing and trying to generate traffic? I was already struggling to drive traffic to my site, but now it's next to impossible. What are the chances?

Should we change niches? Should we take a break? It looks like this is the worst time to drive traffic for some niches.

I'd considered opening a site in another niche, only if my travel site worked, not before.

This is uncharted territory for most of us. We don't know what's going to happen.

Well, that's it for today. I'd like to know your thoughts. Thanks for reading.

Enrique

Enrique, from what I've gathered we have a golden opportunity, as long as we stay the course. Where other websites will fold up, we should choose to stay and fight for our business.

Who is not going to want a vacation after this is over?

You have great responses here. One thing I see for sure is I'm going to optimize my posts better.

I wish you all the best,
Mickey

Hi, Mickey,

Yes, so it seems. I will keep adding content.

The most critical point at this time is generating traffic. It will be harder as long as Facebook blocks my site :(

Thanks for commenting.

I'm going to check out Jay's Pinterest webinar. That might be a better route to take.
I wish you all the best,
Mickey

Actually now is a great time for travel sites.

People always want what they can't have, and right now they can't have travel. So that means that many are dreaming about it even more.

So right now you can
1. Optimize old posts with more affiliate links. Think guide books, suitcases, hiking boots, travel pillows, etc.
2. Select and apply to new affiliate programs which have come available, then add those links.
3. Write new content - all us travel writers have that "guilt" file of the stories we meant to write but didn't yet. More content is always a good thing. Perhaps focus on "Taking Your Dream Trip to...."

Travel will recover when this is over. Just put yourself in the best place possible to be ready.

Hi, Jeannine,

I go through my old posts now and then, but honestly, I don't think adding more affiliate links will help. What I need is to drive traffic to my site.

I guess I'll keep adding content to my site in the meantime. Some people might take a break, so I don't know if I will have some kind of advantage by keeping posting.

Thanks for stopping by.

I would keep adding content Enrique and maybe start another site too if you have the time. More people will be buying online as many are in lockdown.
They will want things to do. Games, craft stuff, pretty much anything that will occupy kids as once they get past lots of TV watching they will get bored.
Adults too will binge watch TV at first then get bored, so research things for them to do.
I know what you mean about the news etc. I rarely ever watched the news before, stopped altogether now. Have seen occasional bits on Twitter about it but I mainly bypass those.
Good luck.

Hi, Linda,

I'd considered opening another site only if the first one worked. I feel managing two sites is too much, at least for now.

I guess I'll keep adding content to my site and look for other options in the meantime.

Thanks for checking in.

I like to think this was unknown... then when known, we may have under-estimated the effect. No timing is good timing for something like this. We just need to no pray that it goes away quickly before too much damage is done, whether health, economic and financial impacts to many.

Definitely. This was something unforeseeable. Many of us have been affected, but some more than others. I hope it goes back to normal soon.
