I found a domain that I want to purchase, but the .com isn't available. So, I'm debating whether I should buy the .net or .org. So, I have a questions for all of you pros...

Do you think that it makes a difference? Why?

Hey Emily. The order of preference is .com then .org .net Also, if a site is purely local, ie. an emergency plumber for example, then country specific domains such as co.uk rank well with country specific flavours of search engines such as http://www.google.co.uk/ncr It's worth bearing in mind that these days domains don't rank, content does. I prefer brands over EMDs (exact match domains). I'd rather have http://www.boohoo.com than http:/www.buycheapwomensdesignerclothesonline.com Rich.

That makes sense, and it's right along the lines of what I was thinking. This domain is keyword rich, but it also happens to exactly match what the site is about, so it's also brand specific. I'm like you though, I tend to prefer brand specific names over EMDs--they tend to be shorter and more memorable. :)

Emily is depends on your niche. Dot com is the best domain to purchase especially if you can get an exact match .com domain for your main keyword. If not, try the plural form of your domain name and see if that is available in a .com. If not and the .net is available then go ahead and purchase that.

Thanks for the advice. I definitely don't want to try the plural for this domain though; it wouldn't make sense. :)
