Hamburger Writing Method
Hello WA Family👋,
How's your weekend so far? It is Sunday morning here in the U.S. Hope you're all safe and happy. 🙂
Today I'd like to share this writing method that I found online. When I was browsing for my next lesson plans, I saw this. I figure I should share it here.
So, I am teaching English online for Chinese students both adults and young learners (kids). I got my Bachelor's Degree in English Education in 2008, unfortunately when I went to the college here in Arizona with Fulbright scholarship, I took Hospitality and Tourism Management because it was in line with the current job I had that time. Long story short, since I am a stay-home-mom now, I want to do something that will give me a sense of purpose every day (this was before I found WA). I chose to teach English online.
Back to the hamburger writing method. What is it? How does it work?
Maybe some of you know and familiar with this method, but for those of you who don't know maybe you've heard sandwich technique or oreo technique before?
I thought for some of you who are not used to writing but because we want to build our site by producing quality contents on our website, probably we could use this writing method.
For the record, I am not a good writer myself, so I like learning about this method. Also, I am not a native speaker. English is not my first language. This method could come handy.
Here are the parts for writing an effective hamburger paragraph:
- Top bun: This could be your topic sentence, or argument. The first sentence of a paragraph should clearly state what is the main idea of the paragraph itself.
- Condiments (ketchup or mustads): This would be your evidence, it could be quotes and paraphrased information from your sources (books or other websites).
- The filling (cheese, pickles, onions, lettuce, tomato, burger): This would be your analysis. The contents of the paragraph. The messages you would like to deliver to your readers! It's where you explain the significance of the evidence in your own words. This is a cruial section to your paragraph. You will write your own opinions and supporting research that will build up your paragraph.
- Bottom bun: This is a sentence that will relate the paragraph back to the thesis statement (top bun) and this is also the chance for you to write transition topic to the next body paragraph.

Please make sure you correctly paraphrase, quote, summarize and CITE in order to avoid plagiarism!
Don't be a Hamburglar!
I know many of you would write as if you talk to friends and as if you write a diary. It is not only easier but also makes us feel free to share our thoughts. I think that's cool too!
So, what do you think guys? Is it a good method to use in writing our website content? What method do you use? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comment section down below.
Thank you for stopping by and reading this post. I'll have a Sunday prayer via Zoom soon.
Have a wonderful day/night/afternoon whereever you are.
Stay safe, happy and healthy!

Thank you for this insight! Definitely a good guideline to follow and add to one's methods. It reminds me of the 3-5-5-5-3 format:
1st paragraph- 3 sentences to introduce your topic and/or argument.
2nd to 4th paragraph- 5 sentences that support 3 of your evidence/supporting ideas.
5th paragraph- 3 sentences to conclude your argument/essay.
I find it a good practice when you want to write something that is short and direct to the point.
A lot of people might already know about it though since I learned it years ago.
Anyways, stay safe and have a good Sunday!

Hi Miguel,
Yes, that's right. I love that format. My ESL professor introduced that writing format to me. I think it really does helpful.
I used that method for my ESL papers and English proficiency test. Definitely one of the best methods.
Thank you for reminding me about the 3-5-5-5-3 format.
Enjoy your Sunday!

The hamburger writing method really works! I have taught this method of writing to students for the past 20 plus years. It is a basic way to hit key points to writing good paragraphs and essays.
Yay!! Thank you, Teacher. I like this method and I will try to implement it into my writing next time. :)
Hi Carol,
Yes, I think so too. :) Thank you for stopping by.
Have a great week ahead.

From a personal note, all these different writing techniques have there place.
In such it depends on what you are writing.
A Blog Post
A Review
A Press Release
A General Post
Blog Post and General can be written as writing to a friend.
The Review needs to be more specific, maybe you could use the Hamburger Writing Method for that.
The Press Release is always written as third person.
Hi Neil,
Yes, I agree with you. We can use different writing method for different purposes as you mentioned.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us today. :)

You're hilarious. Only one point, that I would like to add...
The hamburger method is AWESOME for formal writing.
But maybe not so much for your website... you want that to be conversational.
The reason for conversational writing is to be relatable to your website visitor. You want them to be comfortable with you and that enables better connectivity with them.
Formal writing leaves paragraphs too big, where the paragraphs on your website need to be short. You need to have white space on the page or in your posts. Visitors will lose interest in your blog post with bigger paragraphs.
Just food for thought.
I will keep the hamburger method for future reference, when I am doing formal writing as that is the perfect method for it.
Thanks for the idea though. I am not a good formal writer and that will help me a lot with it.
I wish you the best!
Bob
Bob,
Thanks so much for your comment.
I guess I am a formal writer lol... I am kinda trapped by the writing methods I have learned.
I think you got a point though. We gotta make sure our blog post is enjoyable to read through, not only beneficial for the readers.
I really appreciate for you to stop by and leave a comment.
Cheers,
Ferra
Yeah, I’m not a good writer... that’s one of the reasons I use Grammarly.
I am only passing on info that was given to me when I first started. I am happy that it was helpful to you.
