I am confused if this is a selling site or just an "anything you want site" Can I build a website about a topic of my interest or do I have to sell something?

You can build a website about whatever you want. Many people learn how to make money from there site here. The choice is yours. Wa will help you no matter your desire to promote or not. I have one site where I promote my own product and one for affiliate reasons. :) No matter what to be seen you must know how to drive traffic and build an audience. That's what WA is about. :)
Here you can easily create your own website where you can build by following the lessons provided here at Wealthy Affiliate. It can be any hobby or interest you may have, any topic and you can monetize it in several ways.
You don't have to sell a physical product if you don't want to. You can sell digital goods and join affiliate programs.

Yes, all these guys have given you leads on how to monetize your website. WA is primarily an affiliate marketing network and a DNS (Domain Name Server) so the focus is more on creating contents/blogs and have affiliate products advertised mostly through banners and links. Also if you want to join the bootcamp, then that's when you'll learn the ropes in promoting WA.
