In 1971 I was in my very first sales position and my Branch Manager sent me to Dale Carnegie Sales Training Class. Being basically an introvert it is one of the best things that changed my life. I also got the book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie.

“A person’s name is to him or her the sweetest and most important sound in any language.” – Dale Carnegie.
Recently, I was in several situations where I was once again reminded of the power of using someone’s name when interacting with them.
In one situation, a friend was in a rehab hospital, not getting particularly great personal attention, until his spouse reminded him that he, the patient, had not been very nice to the people who worked there.
“Do you even know the names of the people who are helping you?” she asked him. “No, why should I learn their names?” he replied. She gave him some tips on how just by learning and using their names, he might get better care. Sure enough, it helped.
Why is it so important to use people’s names? A person’s name is the greatest connection to their own identity and individuality. Some might say it is the most important word in the world to that person.

In 1929 Dale Carnegie was conducting classes for sales, management and other endeavors attracting 2500 paying customers a night in New York City in the biggest Depression this country has ever seen. His first book wasn’t even released until 1939.
In 1971 Dale Carnegie classes were being taught all over the Country (USA). This was before Micro computers, before Email & before the internet.
It was extremely important for me going from repairing mainframe computers, programming computers and moving into sales.

At that time the salespeople worked the telephone, made office visits and the wonderful world of “Cold Calling” on the telephone and canvassing at the doorstep un-invited. They probably called it that because it was a most “chilling experience”.
People didn’t know a lot about small computers and billing machines that were custom programmed to complete all kinds of business applications in their office. I went to a number of sales conventions because of my background in large, medium, small machines & what they could do and how to use them.
Names were the name of the game at the time. That is then & This is now.
Now, knowing Names are just as important as it was then. The difference is it is harder to make the connection. As affiliate marketers, we still deal with people but it is a different way.
It is through providing information that they are looking for. We blog the information and if it is presented to a person that is aligned with our thinking they may respond to our Blog.
The email responder would be a definite advantage to the process. A person’s name is to that person, the sweetest, most important sound in any language. By setting up the responder to collect email addresses you should have a place effectively saying; Please provide the name that you like to have people address you by.
All future emails going out will address the individual with that name from an authority source rather than just a name. By doing that you are opening the door of a 2 way connection by the responding person.
Remember when you were a youngster and you got your first piece of snail-mail with your own name on it. It was exciting, you were really somebody & oh that feeling & a connection was made.
I can understand that many who lived with the internet growing up may have not had that experience. Trust me, it was glorious.
How to capitalize on an audience;
- Write Quality Content Offen.
- Ask them to submit Questions or Other interests about your Niche in comments.
- Install an auto responder so that you can notify them of your next Blog release.
Everything in Blogging is an important element to creating authority & connection to the audience.
I have not installed an auto responder for my website as yet, but I am relying on the responses of ones that have.
