Commitment & Consistancy

Last year (2013) was a big year on the bike for me. I had trained hard for an upcoming century ride in June. The only bike that I had was my mountain bike to train on, and I usually rode the 100 miles on my mountain bike. I have been conditioned over the last 16 years to ride a mountain bike for hundreds of miles. Last year, I biked 2,003 miles all on the mountain bike. After all the training that I had done leading up to the century ride (100 miles), someone asked me if I wanted to borrow their road bike for the tour. I gladly accepted the offer and rode the 100 mile tour on a road bike. It was so much easier to bike all those miles on that road bike than it would have on the Mountain bike, and I hardly broke a sweat. All that training had prepared me very well. I had made a commitment to myself that I was going to train hard, no matter how difficult it seemed sometimes. No matter how bad the weather was outside, I was going to train. I rode my bike well into November to reach my 2,000 mile goal for the year. (The most I had ever biked in my life in a single week was 289 miles in 2010.) I had to also constantly go out there every day and get on the bike and ride. It is very similar in the business world. Making commitments with yourself, and then constantly going out there into the world every day, and pressing forward no matter how hard it is some days. On the bike, I had to deal with rain, wind, snow, and hail at times. But I had to keep going because I had committed myself to training. We should all commit ourselves to improving our lives, our businesses, our families. Everything that we have and everything that we are can always be improved upon. You will never make it to the top of the mountain if you quit half way up. Neither will a car ever make it up a steep hill if it is just running on idle. The things in life that have the most obstacles and the most rugged paths most likely contain the greatest treasures in the end. The road to success is bumpy. There are no shortcuts. It requires commitment, dedication, and a constant effort to have the success that you desire in your life. You have got to be willing to work for it until the victory is won.
