Email List for Monument Company
So, my full-time job is for a monument company. Yes, we make fancy rocks to put on dead people. I've contracted with them to rebuild their website and be in charge of their social media and internet marketing, thanks to WA.
Needless to say, internet marketing in this niche is a little more challenging than normal since, most of the time, you're dealing with people who have recently lost a loved one. Everything has to be very sensitive and tactful. It's also hard to "target" most people ahead of time since most of our customers don't want anythign to do with us until they have no other choice.
Another factor that makes this field difficult is that a majority of our clientele are elderly. This means most of them haven't yet adopted a majority of the technology we work with. That being said, we are trying to get our website and social media in place so that in the next 10-15 years our customers will be much more in tune with websites, emails, social media, etc.
We do try to target couples to come in and purchase "Pre-need" monuments, that is, a monument before they actually need it. This lets them be in control of what it will look like and relieves the financial and stressful burden from their children or widow/er when one of them does eventually pass. This is the one area where we can try to target people.
I'm also trying to build an email list, but am struggling to figure out how to make the "sales" pitch to get people to sign up.
How can I market in this niche? If anyone has any ideas in general about marketing in this niche online and, especially, in regard to building an email list, I'd love to hear them!

Hey Dustin it's nice to see you, what I would do, is have some sort of area where people can type in stories in regards to great memories from their loved ones on your business website.
Then, you can add an opt in page for the loved ones to get updates when new family members write a message.
You can also add a check box where people are able to get newsletters or other info without sounding too sales pitchy.
Also, I would look at other websites in the same niche and see what they do as well.
It's just an idea!
Man, you are a better man than me. I'm terrified of gravestones, filled or empty. I commend you on your bravery to this regard, how is it looking at gravestones everyday or whenever you have to?
Well, I can say I never thought I'd be in this field of work until, well, it was the first job I could get when I was back in the US. Haha...
It's never really bothered me too much. I started working in the shop doing sand-blasting as well as riding in the setting truck and installing the finished products in cemeteries. Now I'm in the office.
It's never really bothered me too much. You kind of get used to it. We would just look for people with funny or inappropriate names.
Hi Dustin, I would target AARP. You look way too young! :), but when you get around 50 years old they find you! They started on me in my late 40's (I resisted at that point), and I'm way past that now. Know that AARP has a very large audience that either themselves or their parents will likely need your services, and often it is us baby boomers making the plans for our parents. AARP does lots of paper mail and email, but every month sends me an electronic newsletter. I intend to target that group as well for my health and wellness business.
My two cents! Best of mining!

That's a great idea. I've been struggling with how to target people on Facebook since there's not really a demographic for "people who recently lost a loved one". So, I could target ads to people who "like" AARP or other similar organizations. The same for google ads too.
Thanks for your suggestions!
