1st Page Ranking And Niche Domination

In one of the discussions a member going after the "cycling training" keyword was worried that the niche is too narrow to make money out of. The "cycling training" keyword contains just about 3600 unique searches per month. Instead of answering him directly I decided to write a post so others could also benefit.

Google is increasingly favoring authority sites more than micro niche specific sites and it's their pages that rank for the specific keywords, not the main domain.

Amazon, Wikipedia and other authority sites rank for thousands of keywords with different pages without building a single link to the pages they try to rank for.

They rank because they are seen as an authority on the subject or subjects.

The best thing you can do for your website is to follow the path of these a long-term businesses and create authority sites.

So what am I talking about?

Instead of creating a site about "cycling training" create a site about EVERYTHING that's related to cycling.

Don't get stuck on the keyword cycling, try "mountain bikes", "bmx bikes" etc. Make your webpage an authority site by creating posts for all cycling and these other related keywords.

Don't worry if you get to high competition keywords like "cycle gear" which has 110,000 unique searches. For these keywords write a post containing all the micro keywords related to "cycle gear" like "cycling rain gear", this way you will start to rank for many keywords you didn't expect to rank for and make money out of even if the main keyword is medium or high competition.

Authority sites have categories, so make a few categories like "training", "gear", "bikes" etc. and write posts underneath their related category. This siloing effect have proven SEO benefits.

choosing a narrow niche though is very helpful for new people and helps keep you focused. you could easily start out narrow and as you cover that part branch out and start a new category on your site. If you throw a broad subject at a person who has never done internet marketing before it can be very easy to lose focus and bounce all over the place. In the end i agree, and you should end up with a site that is an authority on all things related to your target.
Also I would say 3600 searches a month is a good chunk of traffic. Actually I find cycling training to not even be as narrow as it could be and one could def. make money from it.

sound sensible a bit of a balancing act between drilling down and covering all the bases
