I want to be a writer....I just don't know how

I nearly froze to death yesterday, after being locked out of the house accidentally. It was painful. It became a great opportunity to clear my mind of all the clutter. to "freeze out the demons". I need to lift myself out. I need to believe in myself again. I need to. I need to. I need to.

How… Seems to be so complicated

These days, anyone who has a smart phone with voice recognition, Can be a writer. It's that simple. Just speak, and you shall be heard.

Every thought, that you could imagine can be carried like a sword and whipped up on to the screen… With precise magic. There is no excuses any more. The word smiths landscape… Has been re-created into a simple tool, that re-creates our every thought that can be spoken through our mouth, into perfect dialogue for readers.

Clearing the cobwebs and clutter.... of failures

I must've written over 250 songs. I haven't really looked in that suitcase for a long time. It's something that I've stop doing for personal reasons of failure.

I'm going to try to share that with you right now, but you have to promise me that if you have felt this in any of your creative endeavors before, that you drop me a comment below and let me know what this means to you. Great. Now that we have a deal I'll spill my guts.

The "write noise"

I'll try to keep it short and sweet… So you get the point… And not some nut jobs tails.

It started out as a teenage curiosity in the 70s and a way to express my feelings for a woman who is older than me at work as a waitress in a restaurant. That song was called "Miss pretty". I rolled my way into a publishing deal by the time I was 20 years old… With surprisingly few songs, and no clear direction. As a flash in the pan…and some Canadian exposure, it died a slow painful death… Another you're wasted.

I revisited the notion in my 30's with the band that I whipped together and fronted the band with fresh songs co written or not, it didn't matter, as long as the process was prolific. I was, and soon acquired another record deal in under 13 weeks. It was the promise that I made, to the guys, in order to rehearse this line up.

How did you pull that off?.....Simple

Entertainment lawyers…yeah yeah....that's how I did it. I waited in their offices patiently… Took up very little of the time… And peaked their interest somehow. I was the 90's.

The last time I took up song writing was the most destructive in 2010… September 1st, to be exact. I had been weighed down by two years of severe depression, and believed I could write my way out of it. After 23 years of not writing or singing or playing a note, and in less than an hour, the first song was born, It was called "Jump". Fast forward 3 1/2 years....166 songs later… 25 years out of place… Cafés and Legion hall audiences, became my final resting place. The final attempt to resurrect something that was 25 years too late. I was outdated. I was "Washed up". F**k.

The lust of self indulgence and not seeing the writing on the wall

It turns out that my depression was just being masked by an obsession to write as many songs as I could, in order to find a purpose for myself. This was a mistake.

166 songs later, in a 3 1/2 year span, I had nothing left....as I had all the years before.

This is my last kick at the can at writing… There will be no lyrics. No notes. No lofty imagination. Just the truth.

I will incorporate some of these lessons I have learned, into everything I do here at the wealthy affiliate.

I will learn how to be a "better writer".

Thanks for all your encouragement.

Hey Dirtbroke (I keep wanting to call you dirt bike), Ha..Ha. First of all you do have writing talent. This blog was great.. I'm kind a like Greg, below, maybe you should think of music as your niche. You definitely know what doesn't work in the song writing business. Use that as leverage to write up a blog and promote things in the music industry that you are very familiar with. Hang in there guy. You have to succeed or you might find yourself outside freezing again ha..ha

Hi Mark,
I agree you write well. I bet some of your songs are really good too.

I know that you are looking for at the weight loss niche but personally I think an indie music niche would be awesome. I know for personal reasons you are reluctant to go that path, I understand. But from your experiences it sounds like you really have something to offer to the next generation be it positive or negative experiences.
Keyword gems: How to write a song lyric? How NOT to write a song lyric? How to get a band gig? etc
It might be cathartic for you.

In addition I'm struggling to find products in my niche to promote that nett me more than a couple of bucks. With musical instruments and recording equipment I'm sure would generate solid commissions.

At the end of the day mate (as we say in NZ) you have a lot to offer. You have been to places so many haven't been and you can write about them with conviction. Or not.
Cheers
Greg

What i will say for you is you always have a lot to say,and that is a compliment.Your writing skills are very good and I do like the way you set out your blogs.

Hi Dirt. Sorry don't know your name! Thanks for sharing this. We all have our failures (not the least me) but keep trying. I have to agree CookMa gave a great answer. Glyn.

Melody (Cookma) gave you a great answer and age is just a number. You are a writer already Mark and I don't believe in the word failure, it just means we are trying and learning lessons. :)

Some of us "of a certain age" do seem to be out of touch with some of the others ... but thanks to the internet ... you can have a huge audience of like minded ... and like aged individuals. Reaching those behind or ahead of you is just gravy! Your blog posts prove that you are a great writer ... with honesty and truth as your cornerstones you can't go wrong! Pick up pen and paper ... or keyboard ... or phone ... and just go for it! M

Wow! what a story! You're far from washed up. Age is just a number. Keep pushing it. :)
