Commit to Being Yourself
Today was a struggle for me. My employer has a very different perspective from me on the work I should be doing. I'm in customer service, which I've always considered as helping people. I've always gone the extra mile and tried to do my best for each person I help. However, my boss is more of the mindset that we should only answer the question asked, not the obvious follow-up question they will have to ask.
I'm feeling SO out of place in my job - really not able to be myself, and constantly anxious that I'm going to do something "wrong" according to my boss. So, I'm looking for another job, when what I really want is to stay home and do my Web site/blog.
A friend of mine sent me this quote today, which I found very encouraging - sort of a "don't listen to the negativity of the boss" message:
"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." Ralph Waldo Emerson
Here's to all you wonderful WAers who are each being yourself. Don't settle into anyone's mold for you! You are unique and you have special perspectives to offer. Go team!

Very wise. Especially in an environment like this with massive diversity in education and culture. Just because someone thinks differently than you do does not make them wrong.
Thanks for posting, Diana. I haven't hear this quote in long while. Very encouraging post. Re-read the last paragraph and remember you are one of us! All the best.
Thank you for sharing your experience and quote, Diana. That quote is a keeper!
Also, whenever your boss pops into your mind, think of that great friend instead. =)
There's nothing like a bad working environment to inspire you to work harder toward freedom from the 9-5, right? Keep going strong and get out of there!
Great advice Diana, There is no place for negativity in the workplace, or anywhere else for that matter. No one benefits from this behaviour. Best to you, Chuck
