Writing Tips Revealed - part 5
DETERMINE THE PURPOSE OF YOUR TEXT
What is the purpose of your text?
Should your text inform or rather amuse the reader, do you want to sell stuff or just want to express an opinion?
There are four different types of texts with each their own purpose:
- Informative texts i.e. an actual news message: readers are moving towards an opinion without the writer's judgment or opinion, they're going to think for themselves, the information is objective.
- Opinion forming texts i.e. columns or reviews: with the writer's view, a reader can determine his or her own opinion.
- Persuasive texts i.e. advertising and marketing texts: the writer tries to convince the reader to buy or to sell.
- Amusing texts i.e. a novel or poetry book: these texts are intended mainly for the pleasure of the reader and the author him/herself.

Any of us has the right to have an own personal opinion upon every subject, but also, by expressing it in the right way, it improves self-understanding, confidence and it broadens ones mind. Thanks for your opinion Divican.

I think I use all Desmond, on different websites, informative on my kleurboekjes, opinion forming on my aloesvera, persuasive on my your.siterubix and amuzing on my kidsart.
I believe there should be a 5th one, educational, for the purpose of teaching people something, or do you scale that under 1 or 2?
Hi Loes, good question. But please note that these tips in particular are meant for adults. Children should be approached in a more educational and persuasive way, indeed for the purpose of teaching something. Anyway, learning to kids would rather be scaled under 3, convincing them to gain knowledge. Thanks for your useful note.

Hi Desmond, I think there might be room for both amusing and informative texts. That's what gives a writer a unique style. I believe there is definitely a way of writing quality, informative content, while at the same time doing it in a quirky or humorous way.
Fully agree Steve, but only in case you're already more experienced with writing and thus able to combine different types of text in a fluent and logical manner. With these tips I try to learn aspiring writers some fundamental skills to develop their own ideas. Not all members within our community, in particular the new ones, are able to put their thoughts and ideas on paper properly.
Thanks for your positive comment,
