What does independence mean to you? happy fourth of july

When you think about it, "independence" can mean something different to each person. What is independence, and what does it mean to you? What is the tried-and-true founded definition of independence? Have you ever thought about it? Does it mean something historical or does it have a personal meaning in your life, or both?

What Is the Definition of Independence?

The definition according to "Webster's Dictionary" is "the state or quality of being independent; freedom from dependence; exemption from reliance on, or control by others; self-sustenance or maintenance; direction of one's own affairs without interference. The state of being sufficient means the independence and freedom to enjoy a comfortable livelihood."

Searching within our own hearts, every person has the need to be "independent" and free to be happy and to enjoy a fruitful life. Without the independence to learn and create, produce and bear, we cannot enjoy the fruit of our own labor, and it would be impossible to thrive and achieve individual full potential.

Without freedom, a bird wouldn't be able to fly free in the sky, or a dolphin to jump high in the ocean while swimming the ocean waves. A hermit crab would have no freedom to change its shell in order to find a new home. Nor would wild horses run wild and free without their independence and the freedom to live and become the beautiful horses that they are.

What does independence and freedom mean to you today? Does it mean freedom from a bad habit, or something that is keeping you subdued, therefore robbing your life of meaning and purpose? Is it freedom from an illness, or hope to someday rise from a wheelchair? Is it freedom from a negative or abusive relationship, or a job that has constrained your happiness? Or could it possibly mean freedom from a life of financial hardship that has made your life miserable, robbing you of the independence to make general decisions for yourself, unencumbered by anyone else?

Have You Thought About It?

How important is independence and freedom personally to you? Have you ever considered losing it? Or, have you lost some independence and freedom already? Maybe because of an unfortunate accident or illness, financial loss, or some other occurrence, some of yours has been taken away. Then you know well the question because you have thought about it. And when you have, you have realized how important they both really are. You know what it is like to lose either one of them. No matter if it is something big or small, the freedom to manage your own life and the independence to do so cannot be challenged in importance. It would be wise to consider carefully what it would be like to lose what we so often take for granted in our own lives. What would it be like to feel "locked up" or "stuck" in a situation that you do not want or agree with? What if the right to do the simplest of things was taken away without your consent? Cherish your freedom to remain independent and free and do everything you can to ensure it. Because if our "Lady of the Land, Liberty" becomes compromised in any way, or if you should find your freedom and independence assaulted or lost, you will suffer a great loss in your own life, as we all will.

So, fight for it! Fight for it in your own life and in the lives of other people you know and love. Fight for your neighborhoods to be decent and worth living in. Fight for the schools your children are educated from, and for the teachers that live to educate them in the skills they need for a future. Fight for your country that so many people fought so hard for in the past to ensure you were free to enjoy the good life you have today. So, what's the answer? Are you ready to fight? Then....

Fight For Your Own Life!

Fight hard for the freedom to live it! Give it everything you've got as you celebrate the Fourth of July! Give the "Old Girl" a "Shout out" and give a big "Thank You" to her today for giving you the chance to live a beautiful life and for making you the wonderful person you are! Fight for her as you would a family member every day of your life. She is worth keeping and protecting as we cherish this day as Americans. We are a big family under one tent. Each of us is different, beautiful, and unique in our own way! So, don't forget to thank "Lady Liberty" today for giving you the chance to be a member of Wealthy Affiliates. Because without her, you would not be here today with the freedom to enjoy reading this blog!

Oh, and by the way, hermit crabs really do move from shell-to-shell having no birth home of their own. They sort of have to "lift" someone else's abandoned home after they've moved on or died. Don't feel sorry for them because actually it's not that bad. As they mature, their taste in condos and luxury estates enhances and they "move up in the world." See what freedom does.
