A Rose by Any Other Name

Have you ever noticed that when a word you don't know shows up, suddenly it is everywhere? There is a word new to me, Nork, which none of the dictionaries seem to agree on what it means. Anybody know what Nork means? Is it a bad word? It does have four letters, can I still use it in mixed company?

Authorities

There are some slang and jargon dictionaries on the internet, besides the ordinary English Dictionary such as Websters unabridged. Urban dictionary (urbandictionary.com) is always helpful. Then there is the truckers CB dictionary on thetruckersreport.com which is helpful if your radio picks up a conversation on the road.

None of these have offered any convincing meaning.

Ask

Ask.com is often surprisingly helpful. Didn't help this time though. They said it is a combination of Nerd and Dork, a Nork. I'm doubtful. Another web source said it is UK slang for breasts. Which actually does sound plausible. Someplace else said it was musicianspeak for a style of jazz. That sounds right too.

This is an unusually hip and cutting edge crowd. If any of you use this word, could you please clue me what it means? I would be so grateful.

Cheers.

A dork and a nerd combined..... Nork :P ewwwww

I think it's the short of Norfolk.I'm just guessing.

I have not come across that word but thanks for the info on dictionaries other than the usual few.

Urban Dictionary is usually the most reliable. It has five pages of definitions of Nork and users vote them up and down which tends to give an indication of how ever-changing slang is actually being used. In the UK, it currently tends to be used as a combination of Nerd and Dork. Rich.

According to Wikipedia: Nork is a residential area of the borough of Reigate and Banstead in Surrey and bordering Greater London, England . It is located between Banstead and Epsom Downs.

Maybe something recent happened in the news?

Don't know. Maybe its the time of year the new words are added? I'm always surprised at the new words coined each year.

I guess people make stuff up all the time or people get it from tv shows like Saturday Night Live or other comedy shows.
