What are you worth?

When you look at your finances, you look at what you owe and what you own to come up with your net-worth statement. Many years ago, everything looked bright and I could forecast a great net-worth and the possibility of retiring before I reach 50.

I worked for the same company for 16 years, but in 2009, I found myself being let go on April Fool’s Day. It was no laughing matter. As the recession kept going on and job prospects dim, I started looking at MLM, a few of them in fact. Meeting after meeting and after two years of it, I gave up on it with nothing to show for it. I had a lot of doubts about myself and becoming successful in anything.

I started trading in the markets and starting losing as well. My net-worth started to go downhill after many years of going up. It took about 3 years before I found full-time employment with a salary 37% less than what I was paid before. Based on my salary, I was worth less than 3 years prior. It will take another 16 years to get back to the previous salary based on yearly merit pay increases, but I realize that I’m worth more than that.

When you look at the education that is available on Wealthy Affiliate, I can become my own “income generating machine.” Even though my financial situation doesn’t look great right now, I know that I have the capability to be worth more than what I get paid in salary for my time.

If you are underemployed or unemployed right now, just think that with your mind, creativity and determination, you can create your own destiny outside of the 9-5 world.

Learning takes time. Experimenting on the website takes time. You won’t see immediate income, but is it worth it? You bet it is. As the old saying goes, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

We are learning to fish and that is worth more than we realize.
