March 25 2023, International day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slav
On March 25, 2023, we are asked to remember and reflect on the victims of transatlantic slave trade, an atrocious and dehumanizing practice that persisted for centuries.
During the Transatlantic Slave Trade, more than 13 million Africans were enslaved, driven by the belief that they were inferior due to their skin color. This resulted in the separation of countless families and the loss of numerous lives.
Despite enduring severe human rights abuses and intergenerational trauma for centuries, enslaved individuals persisted in their resilience, displaying courage and rebellion against the conditions of enslavement, forced labor, and systemic violence and oppression.
The racist ideas and practices of the Transatlantic Slave Trade have left a lasting legacy, perpetuating harmful prejudices and beliefs that still affect people of African descent worldwide.
To combat these issues and promote justice and equality for all, transformative education is essential. Such education empowers learners to critically examine society through an ethical lens, challenge the status quo, and become agents of change.
This approach is crucial for teaching and learning about slavery and ending racism and injustice, ultimately creating inclusive societies founded on dignity and human rights for all people, everywhere.
Thank you for taking the time to read and care WA family!

The most powerful image for human rights I ever saw was on the show "So Who Do You Think You Are?" The great running back Emmitt Smith stood on the steps of the ruins of the building in Africa where his three times great grandfather had been sold as a slave during that time. That was the first time I really grasped the terror and complicated impact of the slave trade realizing it has affect centuries later. and will into the future good hopefully and bad if we don't make changes.
