The International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims was declared by the United Nations General Assembly on 21 December 2010.
It falls on 24 March each year in commemoration of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero of El Salvador on that same day in 1980. Archbishop Romero had spoken out against human rights abuses before his death.
