International Day For the Right to the Truth - March 24, 2023

The International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims was declared by the United Nations General Assembly on 21 December 2010.

It falls on 24 March each year in commemoration of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero of El Salvador on that same day in 1980. Archbishop Romero had spoken out against human rights abuses before his death.

The Day serves the following objectives:

• To commemorate the memory of victims who suffered from gross and systematic human rights violations, and to raise awareness of the importance of the right to truth and justice.
• To acknowledge the efforts and sacrifices made by individuals who fought to promote and safeguard human rights, including those who lost their lives in the process.
• To give recognition to the remarkable work and values of Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero of El Salvador, who courageously spoke out against human rights abuses, defended the principles of protecting lives and human dignity, and opposed all forms of violence, ultimately paying the price for his convictions with his life.

A day to humbly pay tribute to those who have given so much for others.
