Comments for our Website posts

Comments are very important to the ranking system in Google. I think a lot of folks don't really understand just how important they are. When we leave a comment on another members post, we are helping them achieve rank for the keyword(s) associated with that post. This rank assist happens if we mention their keyword(s) in our comment. They in turn would also put their keyword(s) in the response to our comment. To Google it looks like we are talking about the subject of the post and that shows relevancy.

When you go to the "give and take comment thread", we find people looking for comments to their latest posts. This is the place to post a link to your new content in hopes that other members will help you and put a comment on your best new post that you worked so hard on. Of course there are a few simple rules to follow here. The main one is "post comments on others before asking for comments". This is a mirror of the "golden Rule" we learned as kids, "Do unto other as you would have done unto you". Makes sense doesn't it.

I would say that we should go a little further than that. We all know what the comment screen of our website looks like. We've been there many times responding to the comments others have posted on our sites. When a member posts a comment, most of the time they include their website and email along with their name. What I do is look at that information to see if I have already posted to that member's website. If I have already posted to their site then they are returning the favor to me, but if I haven't, then I go directly to their site and post a comment to them to return their favor to me. It's just common courtesy! and it's a way to get more comments to your site.

Putting comments on other member sites is not always easy, that is if you plan to say something relevant. It requires time and thought. Time we could be doing something else, but instead we are trying to help our fellow members.

My point for this post is simple. When you are answering your comments, take a second and look to see if you gave that member a comment on their post. If you didn't, then go give them one. They'll know they didn't waste their time on you if you do.

totally with you there Ed! common courtesy! I always return the favor and really try to make the comments relevant to the content. Not technical things about the website itself. I don't think those comments belong there. If you are to comment, do it right :)

Absolutely Emily. Technical stuff about your site doesn't belong in comments to your post. Other visitors (not WA members) coming to your site won't understand why someone is discussing how you have your site setup. They will be expecting conversation about your post.

totally Ed! if someone is recommending that I change my background picture, well that does not belong in their comment on my site....Always appreciate your comments :)

This is a great post and offers many valid points. There's been lots of post touching on this very subject, and it's a very important one to be aware of.
Cheers
Pete.

Thanks for reading my post. I hope it doesn't come off as a rant. Cheers
