USS LANG (DE 1060) PLANK OWNERS FROM TODD SHIPYARDS

Charles Horne - Nov 26, 2020

I hope you are able to read this post I just sent to you, I was sitting here not thinking of anything in particular when memories of my Grampa and Gramma telling me stories about their life in Fort Lupton, CO. I feel so lucky to have those stories and my memories of those lives and times that will never die as long some hold those prescious moments in time. I remember sitting on the porch with my Grampo, spending hours dropping pebbles into the holes of the boards. I remember Gramma and I in Betteravia, CA, where Grampa was the supervisor of a Sprekles sugar factory Gramma said something like "Dear, would you like to learn something exciting today? Of course I said. The next thing I knew, we were sitting in the front seat of their almost new 1959 Ford, remember I was only 11 years old. She said to me, you know we have no secrets from Tampa but today will be our secret. She handed me the car keys and proceeded to spend the rest of the day teaching me how to drive. I remember thinking, wow I am only 11 years old but if Gramma says it's ok then it is ok

USS LANG (DE 1060) PLANK OWNERS FROM TODD SHIPYAR

Me and Sweetheart are kicking it, memories flooding my mind Screen porches, sweet corn so sweet we used it like a candy bar Riding in Uncle Jim's pickup, standing on the seat, speeding down gravel roads at full speed because my uncle was a volunteer fireman. I hung out at the looding docks sampling every conceivable kind of fruit and vegetable. Some of that produce doesn't even exist today. I had no idea of the hardships all those people faced but they woke up every morning. smiling and telling jokes and then they left for work, not returning until every job and chore was done, and somehow they came home just as happy as when they had left. It took me a long time to understand how that was possible. They would tell me they loved their work and jobs or their friends told jokes in the fields, but the truth was there was no choice, things always had to be finished and doing that gave them a kind of pride not seen today. Those years and memories instilled in me the values and beliefs I have today and I have done my best to pass them down to my kids. HAPPY THANKSGIVI

Me and Sweetheart are kicking it memori

Have you ever been reading a book or watching tv when suddenly memories rushed into your mind. Sharp, vivid memories that make you feel like you are back in the day re-living times from your past. Recently I have been keeping track and the rewards are immense.

I like the stories about your Grandparents the best. As for me, I knew all my grandparents, but all of them were quite a distance from our family, so we only saw them maybe once a year, and sometimes less. I still have fun memories about them, though!

Margaret

You are so right Margaret. Now that I am a Grandpa and my Grandkids get so excited when we can spend some time together, it dawned on me that my
Grandpa and Grandma were just as excited to see me as I was to see them. Some relationships are so special.

Great point, Chuck 😊

Very nice memories, indeed, Chuck!

Jeff

I have been very fortunate, living the right time with the right in-laws. One other memory came to me this morning. My Grandma had an electric clothes washer but it had no spin cycle. She taught me how to put each piece of clothing between two wooden rollers and squeeze as much water out then on to the clothline to hang them up to dry. Thank you Jeff, they really are good memories.

That was a neat trick too, Chuck! Grandmas were always so wise! The wisdom of having lived a long life!

Jeff

It's amazing the things we used to get away with when the world was a safer place. The first time I went by myself to visit my Grandparents was a real adventure. I bought a ticket at Greyhound Bus in Modesto, CA to San Louis Obispo, CA, about 1000 miles away. The first thing I did when I got aboard the bus was to make friends with the driver and of course I made sure he knew where I was supposed [o get off. I guess these are the important things when you are 11 years old and everything seemed so big. It was a great adventure.

Yes, Chuck! There were a lot of things that were big when we were 11 years old!

Jeff
