Taking A Look at The Traditional Definition of a NIche
I know that in business, we use the word "niche" to refer to a specific segment of the market that is the focus of our marketing efforts. Or, as the training here at Wealthy Affiliate has taught us, it's a group of people looking to buy something. But, have you ever considered the traditional definition of the word?
I was thinking about this morning, and it gave me some key insights into affiliate marketing, having my own website, and creating content. And, I thought I would share it with you.
A Niche is a Place to Put Something In
According to the dictionary, a niche is " a shallow recess, especially one in a wall to display a statue or another ornament." Basically, it's a cubbyhole or a nook. It's a place where something belongs.
When thinking in terms of your niche, you can think of it in terms of where you belong. Where do you hang out? Where do you fit in? What do you claim as your place in this world.
For me, it's simple. I'm an educator: that's one place where I fit in. Also, I'm a parent, an avid reader, a writer, a veteran, a sports coach, a movie buff, and a geek (Harry Potter, DC Comics, The Hobbit, Game of Thrones, and so much more).
Who is the Statue?
All of these are places where I belong. These are the nooks, the corners or the world, that I call home. I'm the statue that fits in that niche.
And, so are the other people that are like me: the teachers, the parents, the readers, and the geeks. That is their niche, as well.
Where Has Life Placed You?
So, when looking for a niche, think of the places where you belong. Think of the people you associate yourself with: their hobbies, passions, and interests. Most likely, they are yours, as well.
This is your nook It's your corner of the world where you feel comfortable. Here you find like-minded individuals that accept you for who you are.
And, it can be your niche for your business, as well.
Just a little something to thinking about from the dictionary.

In WA we are referring to a niche market or niche website, so the word niche is being used as an adjective - and the definition for niche as an adjective is as follows;
"denoting or relating to products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population."
Yes, I agree as I stated that in the beginning of my post. I was just looking at it from a different angle- from the perspective of hobbies, interests, and groups to which you belong. I was just thinking of suggestions for niche ideas.
For example, I'm a high school English teacher and college professor, so those are two groups that I belong to. I then can build a website that provides services or products to teachers. I could further drill down to provide services or products to new teachers because I was once a new teacher and understand the struggles they face.
I personally think a great way to find niches can simply be to look through all of your recent purchases, and then think outwards "can I build a niche website around that?"... Often it's the little purchases that we forget about that can make for the best niche websites :)
Yeah, that works, too. Most of my recent purchases have been Game of Thrones collectibles, so that ties in with what I was saying above. Your spending habits indicate a lot about who you are as a person. I'm obviously a geek.
Haha, I belong to the 1% that has never seen the Game of Thrones.
