Knowing Your Target Audience- A Lesson I Learned From My Son
So, over the past two days, I drove 1,461 miles to get to Las Vegas.
No, I wasn't there to gamble. No, I didn't hit up Hell's Kitchen.
Instead, I went to see Mariah Carey in concert.
I drove all that way for one event. Why?
Because my son wanted to go. He's a huge Mariah fan, and it's always been his one desire to see her in concert.
So, I took him for his senior trip, and he loved it!
Even better- his behavior was perfect the three weeks leading up to the trip.
He did everything I asked him to do. He even volunteered to do extra things around the house
This never happens. I usually have to cut the power to the Playstation to even get him to notice anyone else.
What was the change?
I gave him what he wanted. I understood his desires, and I fulfilled them.
He trusted me because I understood him. And, I was rewarded with his positive response.
This is a great lesson to learn in reaching your target audience. If you want them to trust you, you have to understand them.
You have to know what makes your target audience act.
Is it a problem that they share in common?
Is it questions that they want answered?
What makes them buy something?
Find the answers to these questions, and you're a long way toward earning their trust.
Then, you create content specfic to those needs or wants.
Provide them with the solution. Answer their question.
And, you become a trusted source of information.
You begin with knowing your audience.
Then, you earn their trust.
After that, you can pitch them.
You can't skip the process.
You have to begin with understanding your target audience.
I like to create an image of my ideal audience member, or avatar.
I create a whole back story for this avatar. I give her a name. I even give her pets names.
It helps me relate to her. I write all of my content to her.
The result? I relate better to my target audience, and I make commissions.
Isn't interesting where your inspiration comes from?
This post started because I took my son to a concert.
Where will it end up?
A deeper understanding of my target audience.
